*Official* England in the West Indies 2024

International Vice-Captain
Our ODI squad has been announced, Hetmyer is in for Athanaze:

Shai Hope (Captain)
Jewel Andrew
Keacy Carty
Roston Chase
Matthew Forde
Shimron Hetmyer
Alzarri Joseph
Shamar Joseph
Brandon King
Evin Lewis
Gudakesh Motie
Sherfane Rutherford
Jayden Seales
Romario Shepherd
Hayden Walsh Jr.

I really don't know why they are still persisting with Walsh Jr.
Great to see Hety back. But yes, I don't see what Hayden brings to the side any more. Surely Akheil is a better pick?

Yes, absolutely…Hetmyer is a much different player now, as we’ve seen in the CPL. Hopefully his role is more fluid rather than just a finisher. Imagine, him and Sherfane together in the crease.

Akeal, I guess, has opted out.

The squads a bit of a mess. Far too many spinners and not enough batsman.

Going to have a few playing in wrong position and one too many all rounders.

Something like this at a guess for the ODI's. Hain should be in the side!

Salt
Pepper
...

the selectors are having a laugh, but the joke will be on england if they get thrashed again. they didnt look good against oz 2nds even at home.

The timing if the series and the squad selected strongly suggest to me that the ECB don’t greatly care about the result of the series. These are really exhibition matches, designed to try out some players and give a boost to tourism in the host islands.

Where is Pooran?
Opted out.
Also, this (probably?),

KOLKATA – West Indies superstar batsman Nicholas Pooran has reportedly been re-signed by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as their first-choice retention for the upcoming 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

According to reports, the 29-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman was recently in the RPSG group’s office in Kolkata where he reportedly signed with Lucknow for INR 18 crores, which equates to just over US $2 million.

In the 2023 auction, LSG bought Pooran for INR 16 crores following his stint with SunRisers Hyderabad.

“Pooran is committed to LSG, possesses a winning mindset, thinks deep and above all he is adaptable to the batting order and any match situation,” said an LSG official.

Pooran had a superb 2024 IPL season, scoring 499 runs inclusive of 35 boundaries and 36 maximums.

I've said elsewhere that I obviously understand all players wanting to feather their nests, particularly players from the non "Big 3" nations. It is a bit of a shame though that players who already have a successful career spend in franchises seem to minimise their availability given that the competition won't start for over 4 months.

He stated some time ago that he was going to take a break from WI cricket after the T20 WC. With the new management, that was okay as he is not with a contract. We don't have a major tournament to play in in the near future. So, maximize your earnings.
His absence creates opportunities for other guys to step up. Jewel Andrew is competing for that spot, he's a keeper also.

It looks like England are using ODIs as a way of testing players... Their bowling line up look solid (Topley, Archer, Rashid, Curran), but their batting line up looks veerrrrry fragile and unexperienced.
- Feels like Salt is an explosive T20 player not an ODI player.
- I like Jacks and I hope he can perform well, he's a great batter and a good bowler.
- Cox has played 4 List A matches and averages 24.5 and is England's number 3.
- Bethell is pretty exciting, though he averages 24.9 in List A.
- Dan Mousley has played 9 List A matches (but he averages 37.5)
- And then Livingstone averages 30 in 30 matches. I always feel he must be disappointed with his career. He was one of the bright star when he first played for England and then I feel he never reaaaally reached his potential.
- Sam Curran is "ok", I think he is more a T20 player too (imo he should be England's number 3 or 4 in T20)
- Then Jamie Overton... No idea why he is here... He replaced Jos Buttler, one of the best T20 batter in the world, against Australia, and here he is in the ODI XI ... ? The reason he was there against Australia was because of his strike rate apparently, but is it still as relevant in ODI ?
- Then come the bowlers. But why focus so much on new batters and keep "old" bowlers ?
Are the old bowlers protecting the new batters ? So that the team is not entirely unexperienced ?
Anyway... I'm just readings statistics. I still hope those new players can make an impact and score loooooooots of runs :)

Nicky, you are bang on. Here is the point where I can't help mention that it is much harder to pick an ODI squad because the only domestic matches are played when most of the serviceable domestic cricketers are engaged in that 16.4 comp...

First time that Seales has taken more than one wicket in an ODI. His average improves from 70-plenty to 68.50

Gonna fun watching our very own, Bethell, play here.
