***Official*** England in Sri Lanka

Talikng of Jayawardene, he has had rather a lot to say for himself this series, hasn't he. First we had the stuff at Columbo about England batting too negatively (er pots & kettles anyone?) and today he's been publicly saying that we gave up yesterday. OK, so it's probably true, but you don't need to tell the world that about your opponents. And again, pots & kettles spring to mind after SL's white flag job in Aus last month.
Dude has a 213 run stake in the 418 runs England trail by.

We batted first last time, didn't we. There may well have been a 400+ first innings lead then, as well. IIRC the innings loss was one of, if not the biggest, in our history.
Third-biggest, I think. The lead in that game (we did indeed bat first) was actually only 363, I'd thought it was bigger than that.
As for the follow on, there's no reason at all not to enforce it unless he's been reading too much about 'mental disintegration' or somesuch. The bowlers are hardly going to be knackered, are they.
Nope, but he doesn't need to enfore the follow-on. I'd always only ever enforce follow-on if it's essential. Too many people, for mine, take the "follow-on as a rule, don't use follow-on as an exception".

As I said - the series is wrapped-up, you could inflict an even more impressive defeat by batting again. And if it rains and mucks it up, it doesn't matter.

Probably the shock of actually facing one after the rain break.

England will probably be praying that it doesn't rain tomorrow morning, so they can be back in time for the weekend.
They want to be home before Christmas Eve...

Really, I could see the logic to that if it wasn't for the bad weather around. Enforcing the follow on gives Sri Lanka the best chance of winning the match, so it's definitely the right decision for mine.

I've seen far worse batting performances to be honest, and I don't think the wicket was as good as it's been made out to be.. I'm struggling to think of the worse batting performances, but I think they all involve England anyway..

Vaughan's poor decision to put the opposition in after winning the toss IMO was the most crucial mistake of all....

As I said repeatedly before, IN SL the Team winning the toss is stupid not to bat first...Australia pulled off a 3-0 whitewash easily mainly because they won three tosses and batted first in all 3 Tests...Vaughan made the correct decision in the second Test but on this occasion the pitch being an uncertain quantity may have swayed him yo not bat first....but still a poor decision..

Reckon had Vaughan batted first Vaas, Chanaka and Maaalinga would've knocked us over TBH.

Did you not see how much the ball was moving? It may have been Galle in name, it was as good as Derby in May in nature. It wasn't Vaughan's fault, it was just dreadful bowling and execrably pathetic catching.

Basically. England's bowling performance was far too schizophrenic to pressure SL for any concerted period of time. That coupled with some dire work in the field and overall lack of intensity, explains why the game is at where it is right now. Had SL bowled first, Vaas et al wouldn't have bowled a great deal differently.

What are people’s feelings about Welegedara?
I've never seen him bowl before but liked what I saw. If he can add a few more toys to his armoury, I'd be inclined to pick him ahead of Front Foot Fernando every time. Admittedly, I was disappointed Sujeewa De Silva get a go in this test, but I hope Welegedaragets an extended run with the side - i.e. the up-coming ODI series against Australia.

he looked a bit flat to me, maybe it was the pitch.. People are already comparing him to Vaas, and I think the only similarity is the Left Arm-ness..

Don't get me wrong, it's his first test and he doesn't look bad, but I wasn't particularly excited by him..

I don't understand how two SL batsmen can embarrass the English bowlers and then twenty minutes later, the same pitch causes England to fold like that?

WTH is going on?

Yeah, little in common with Vaas other than the arm he bowls with. Given his First-Class economy-rate is poor TSTL, his accuracy today was impressive. Looked like he could get it down fairly heavily, too, which is always a plus, and pushed the speedster up towards 140kph. But it was alarming how little he swung the ball, and his only 2 wickets came from batsmen playing down the wrong line of straight balls.

Nonetheless, as my namesake says, many have gone far, far worse on Test deubts.
