Surely the ECB have to administer the fatal injection and do away with Cook in ODIs after this r-right guys?

Cook's a genuinely good chap, but he's a serviceable captain at best and doesn't even look like scoring just now.

Until he got the test captaincy it should be remembered he wasn't in the ODI reckoning. He found a way to make it work when he was in prime nick, but he patently isn't just now so his position is becoming untenable.

He only thing keeping him in the job, aside from selectorial largesse/loyality/pigheadness (delete according to taste), is that his most obvious successor (Morgan) is in a trough of form himself just now.

No surprise there - only that we actually managed to win a couple in the series, which not many folks would have predicted.

Is this England side going anywhere? We seem to be perpetually short of 2 or 3 players to make us genuine contenders. On the face of it there's the making of a side for the following WC, but that's assuming that our newer players develop into something more substantial.

Of course, Sanga's farewell ton overshadowed everything today. A wonderful innings from a wonderful player. The sort of cricketer we gave up producing many moons ago.
Are you seriously suggesting that nobody thought England would win a game. I find it hard to believe

really pleased witht the way we bounced back from a loss to take the game and the series convincingly..I am glad that Satchi has come back and a) looks legal and b) is picking up wickets and bowling very economically..Lakmal lookedvery good today and he has staked his position as leader of the quicker bowlers for the WC ( in the absence of Malinga) . I would like to see Eranga in the team too personally as i have always been a fan of his..Batting wise Sanga shows his class(again) with another ton and it was a very emotional end for him in his home town..The only thing i would have liked to see is a decent opening partnership- personally, thinking about it i dont know why we dont try Thirrimanne with Chandiguns replacing him in the middle order as the former has done well in Aus as an opener and it then allows mahela to stregthen the middle order...overall well done Sri Lanka on taking this series..
As far as England go i think Cook needs to resign before he loses his test captaincy as well as the ODI one, Morgan / Root can do it..Taylor has been a fantastic addition to the team with the energy he bats with and cant see Bell taking that spot back..The batting looks pretty good with Ali,Taylor,Root,Morgan,Buttler,Bopara - add in Hales and that's solid if you ask me..bowling wise, Anderson & Broad coming in with Jordan/Woakes & Tredwell..all bases covered..If we cant win it,I always want England to...

Does England have any decent spinner ATM (other than Tredwell) in their domestic circuits ?
The most obvious choice for all formats would be Rashid, turned into a serious gun with Yorkshire in all formats, still young and skilled in all facets of the game.Unlikely to get into the world cup squad, but I'd be shocked if he didn't play for England in the next 12 months.

Thing with Rashid is he is an allrounder and we already have Moeen as a spinning allrounder in the side, not sure we can pick both in the same side. Serious lack of options though around the counties.

I suppose Rashid does turn it the opposite way to Moeen, so they're not identical by any means. Beyond that, he's a genuine bowler who can also bat rather than a bit-of-both type of player, so I wouldn't hold that against him. Ditto Moeen of course.

It's probably too soon for Rashid, as I think we're only looking at one good season behind him. But given the strength of Australia's pace attack compared to ours, I could make a pace for providing Ashes wickets similar to those in 2013 and playing him instead of a fourth quick.

No he hasn't, hence me saying it. He's been out under 20 in about half his innings. That's not consistently getting 30.

If it was over a long spell yes. At this stage it's too small a sample to go on. Too many low scores in there at the moment to suggest that as a lasting average, especially sine nobody in history has done.

A moeen style batter is of not going to come off all the time, but his conversion rate is pretty decent and he showed that he can bat big. I've lost count the number of times finch spooned a catch to mid off.

To me he shows more promise than hales. Pity he doesn't have a partner that can hold on in case he doesn't pull it off...

Yea I'm all for Hales but Ali + Hales might be too risky at the top.. if only Cook went back to his more dependable self..
