*Official* England in South Africa 2019/20

If you want to see why the basic case behind “the hundred” is so rubbish you only have to look at this game. The last over must have taken about 15 minutes. You can’t shorten a game purely for the purpose of fitting into a pre determined time slot. When the pressure’s on in a tight contest it will take longer. 2020 started off as a short game. IPL games take 4 hours these days!

Denly is an efficient selection in tests, justifiable in an odi squad that is significantly weakened but in this t20 team? In a world cup year? When you're picking him in front of a bloke who has averaged 57 and a strike rate of 155 (more than +45 average on Denly)? Seems absolutely baffling to me. Game's done us one favour at least and revealed to us how much we need Butler in the middle order, and can afford to do so if we have all of Roy, Bairstow, Malan and even Root to make a stake for the top 3.

It's an interesting point you make.

Coming from it at a slightly different angle I'd say that this game from England's pov illustrates why they need something better than the 20 over blast. With 18 counties (and international cricket going on at the same time) the talent is so thinly spread that anyone half decent bats in the top 3 or 4 for their counties. This leaves us short of credible middle order options. Denly, Stokes, Ali here all bat top 3 for their counties. The hundred should be higher quality with the talent more concentrated.

I was posting in jest but I wouldn't call it exactly a choke. Some good bowling by Ngidi at the death. That slower ball yorker(?) to moeen was pretty good to watch

Yo, there were so many factors involved that somehow accentuated the Moeen dismissal. The previous ball two runs was allowed inside the 30-yard circle.
The tension. The crowd. The commentators. I was on the edge of my seat. And that freaking perfect ball. It landed on a rough spot (but it already had deceived Moeen) and gripped. The crowd went loud after that

Does Buttler usually open in T20s? Where’s Root/Malan?
He's been opening for a while I think and tbf has been fairly successful. I'd much rather have him in the middle order to finish games off though, since we have more than enough resources in terms of openers and no.3s

On that subject Root has been rested, but he probably isn't necessarily a first xi pick at the moment because of Malan having a pretty ridiculous start to his t20i career. I've seen a few people on twitter suggest that Malan is a problematic personality for the team, which bizarrely seems to stem back to that refused run off a last ball in NZ to preserve his 100*. I know this rubbed Morgan the wrong way, and that might be influencing their reluctance to have him as a consistent pick. He weren't the most liked at Middlesex apparently. It is a weird situation really.
I think Root will eventually take his place back at 3 in this team for the WC though. He is too influential on the strength of this side in the one day stuff

Well done boys, I know its only a 20/20 game, but winning a game you honestly shouldnt have, should be good for a team

Didnt take a wicket, but that Steyn delivery was awesome:
