Pretty sure the only people in the world who think England would be better off with Compton opening and Ballance at 3 also thought that before the second Test. Given the selectors didn't belong to this group, it wouldn't make sense for them to make the change now.
Ya he should've been dropped before the 2nd test.

Cook averages 1 fifty+ score every 3 innings, Warner 2.52 and Vijay 3.6.

Being harsh on Hales.
Not like his fifty was a really big score either...Cook, Vijay or Warner's average 50+ score is not just a shade above 50

Among Hales, Compton and Ballance - Compton is by far the most technically sound...And between Hales and Ballance only one has scored decent runs at International level so far - both are technically bad, but Ballance at least has a decent discipline to build an innings and puts a price on his wicket. It's a shame that they got rid of both Pietersen and Bell; but if we forget that then Ballance has been better than Hales in terms of temperament, discipline and performance.

Piedt released from squad according to cricinfo
Hectic.

Joburg has been pretty dry for the past few weeks, except for the last few nights actually, so I wonder what the pitch will do.

I think Piedt should play actually.

Huge gamble. Could be a series turning one for them, so I get playing 4 seamers. Just not much variety in that attack (essentially fast, bouncy quicks + Rabada) and I would always pick a spinner.

I dont actually care. I just think its harsh to say that 1 fiffy in 4 innings against SA in SA on Test debut is 'underperforming' for an opening batsman. Thats just needlessly harsh. You could have made your point without that.

I'd be really surprised if RSA no longer think Morris is in their top four available seamers after deciding he was in their top three available seamers last match. Morkel-Abbott-Rabada-Morris IMO, pending Abbott's fitness.

That being said, dropping Piedt is incredibly stupid.

Opening 'against SA in SA' is not the same when Steyn and Philander don't play

Steyn and Philander aren't playing the next test anyway, so yeah, makes no sense to drop him by your logic.
Don't try to act smart. Go through the conversation again. Here is a short summary:
I said 1 50 in 4 innings is underperformance for a test opener. Then ***** said Cook, Warner, Vijay score 1 50 in 3 innings so I am being harsh on Hales. I replied saying Hales' top-score was just a shade above 50. ***** countered saying we should give him some leeway because opening against SA in SA is difficult anyways. I said not when Steyn and Philander don't play.

So, my logic still stands at the 'Hales has underperformed' category and has not shifted to 'he has performed well against SA without Steyn and Philander' zone.

I seriously don't see any reason for persisting with an opener who has poor technique and doesn't perform - that's a deadly combination. Remember he came to the team not because of technique but because he started performing at FC level 'in spite of poor technique'. He mustn't get a long run if he doesn't perform.

Yes... but then the demographics are wrong... which means JP must play
Who are they going to drop though?

Only option is Van Zyl, but then a non-opener has to open (which I suppose is already the case).

Unless they bite the bullet and go in with eight white fellas.
