There is a question of skill as well. The pitch plays a part but a lot of it is your skills and ability to extract the gifts from the pitch. Steyn could move the ball on pitches others found lifeless.

It's kinda like the period around the middle of 09, where Oz were number one but weren't really all that by then (win in South Africa notwithstanding) and then lost their spot when we beat them in The Ashes. Think the Saffas went to 1 at that point before India took over and were the undisputed best side for a good year or so.

The disparity in all sides at home versus away is of course what makes the rankings so flaky at the moment, so this win puts a big marker down.

England without Broad and Anderson would be hugely different side to be fair. Only Australia have the depth to lose their best two bowlers and not have a big drop off imo, which is why they are the best team in the world.

It wouldn't be a problem if hales was scoring at a decent rate, not that I'm complaining, much rather he protected his wicket, and a 20 n.o. could be massive for his confidence here in less than great conditions

No the batting collapse isn't due to philander and steyn being absent.I can only guess why that happened. Kudos to eng.
