Dane Peterson has a superb FC record. Would he be in contention for a test call up at some point? Listed as RF on cricinfo.
Behind Steyn, Philander, Morkel, Rabada and Abbott there is definitely competition in that chasing pack so who ever impresses at the right time could get that opportunity.

He bustles in and has a quick arm action and is pretty accurate and it gives you the feeling he is at the batsman. Not overly quick. Probably around the 135 to 138 region.

I know a lot of people don't like discussing it, but quotas.

Someone South African explain me what Zondo is doing here?. Averages less than 30 in all formats, and just coming off from the Ram Slam where he was comically bad (he was), which made his moaning about been excluded for the limited over side in India even more absurd.

I initially thought his four day overall numbers may have been misleading, e.g he was a mug for his first few seasons, but has gunned it in the last few seasons which would make his selection justified, but nope, an average of 30 in the last season. He hasn't even played a 4 day game since March.

I don't have enough knowledge of four day cricket in South Africa to suggest alternatives, but surely they are more worthy young players worth a look?

Heck, why not have a look at Miller? He bossed it last season in the few games he played.

You sort have got to get used to it. I certainly have by now that quotas are part of our game and it really is unfortunate. This season it has been even worse with only 5 white players allowed per team and then if you have overseas players in your T20 team it takes their spots as well. Some of the players playing domestic has been laughable but we can just hope we keep producing individual talent because I am not sure our domestic game can be a yard-stick anymore.

There are plenty of players more deserving than Zondo but his father is a big time judge in Durban and our chief selector is also a Zulu from Durban so no coincidence.

Hopefully before the first test I am going to put franchise averages up in the SA domestic thread to see where we stand & just how undeserving Zondo and Ramela's spots are in this 'A' team.

Thanks.

Is De Bruyn been excluded in this game to get Zondo into this team? :detective:thumbdown

I suppose at least De Bruyn was playing in what looked a strong enough 4 day game.

Neither Ramela or Zondo should be there but there is politic pressure and both are involved in the Black African Cricketer movement thing that is going on as well...

Don't have a problem with the likes of Radaba and Bavuma as they deserve their spots. But seriously guys averaging 30 and 27 in first class cricket shouldn't be close to even the A team.

Miller hasn't done enough in 4 day cricket to be selected for 3/4 day cricket. He has only cemented his spot in the dolphins 4 day side in the last season or so, he needs to do more.

For reference Zondo average 29.71 in first class cricket and Ramela 28.

For comparison the other top 7 in the A team averages the following:
Cook 40.28
Reeza Hendricks 34.28 - In all honesty Andrew Puttick should be ahead of him but you can sort of justify this pick in saying they want to groom a younger opener with cook instead of going for 2 older players.
Rillee Rossouw 44.83
Quiton de Kock 45.36
Dane Vilas 38.61
Chris Morris 30.64- So basicly the bowling all rounder is averaging more then 2 of the top 6....

The likes of Theunis de bruyn, heino kuhn, ect are much more deserving then zondo and ramela...

Didn't realise how close Cook is to 10,000 runs. Will be disappointing if he doesn't get there this series.

Bit unlucky for Hales that as soon as he got a start they went off for bad light. All eyes on him now anyway.

He's not far off the most runs ever by an opener iirc
There cannot be too many ahead of him. Names to come to mind are Graeme Smith, Matt Hayden, or Virender Sehwag. But I guess Sunil Gavaskar is the only one ahead of him, not?

Yup. And Gavaskar's not far ahead at all at 10100 runs or so.

Yeah. had a look and Gavaskar is about 400 ahead. No one has made 10k as an opener, they have all batted at three for a series or two.

Paterson to Hales, OUT, leaves one that swings back in and clips the top of off-stump
AD Hales b Paterson 56 (143m 102b 9x4 0x6) SR: 54.90

Oh god damn it man

As did Cook. I'm quite sure Trescothick was still in the side when Cook came along. Is there a way to get exact numbers?

Hales bowled leaving one isn't a good look, but overall that opening stand is very positive especially as this SA A side is much stronger than most touring teams are given to play against.
