***Official*** England in South Africa 2015/16

Declared too early, imho. Should have scored 700 at the least. No point declaring on the second day when you're batting at this pace. There is always the risk you bat much slower second time.
Other factors to consider though. If you commit to batting again you often want to bat reasonably slowly otherwise you remove the whole benefit of doing so (ie. giving the bowlers a rest).

Wouldn't be surprised if Cook also took account of the dropped catches as well. What more evidence needed that South Africans are mentally ready for a batting collapse?

I wanted half an hour of Moeen and Broad.
To be fair, they've got to bowl.

I think it's a pretty good declaration tbh, it's on the early side but that's a result of the speed of scoring. Plus Cook will probably not want to be still enforcing the follow on if SA bat for more than 3 sessions, so we have plenty of time for a second innings that we can take our time with.

I can see declarations biting you on the arse with 550 but 630 seems like a bridge too far.

Yeah, declaring now rather than letting the Saffers get a few cheap wickets (if Rabada had got a 5fer or something that would have been disgustingly criminal) was better option. They don't seem in a good place mentally to say the least, an early wicket and Amla will be under the pump in a huge way.

Not sure if this has been discussed but has any team scored 200 in a session before? What were we 4 short I think in the first?

Stokes has always had ridiculous potential with the bat, I'd just resigned myself to him being to stupid to ever put innings like this together consistently. He won't do it at home often (apart from at Lords, aka the flattest and worst pitch in the country) but away we might get one of these type of innings occasionally. Could see him having a champion tour of Australia at some point.

Usually I mute commentary but when Atherton is doing the commentary, I make it a point to listen. Intelligent insights usually. Possibly the best at the moment.

Howe_Zat is going to like this: Stokes fell one run short of Graeme Smith's highest score - made against England in Lords. An innings I belive How_zat is a huge fan of.
