*Official* England in NZ 2023

"Kyle Jamieson will play just one of the two cricket tests against England this month as his injury comeback is carefully managed.

Black Caps coach Gary Stead said the towering pace bowler was highly likely to play the series opener with the pink ball at Tauranga’s Bay Oval, starting on February 16, but sit out the finale at Wellington’s Basin Reserve."

So Tickner may play in Wellington, unless they change the squad again.

Never said it wasn't, but having a series opener and finale just makes it sound grander than it actually is. Like NZC is trying to gaslight us into thinking it's meaty.
that's exactly what they do with their scheduling in general.

they're lucky we're underwater.

So 1st test is pink ball test, probably starts at 6.30 am india time.

Red ball test usually starts at 3.30 am IST

Cant wait for this. Will be a sort of test, England are on fire and New Zealand are aging and have no squad depth. If we attack they will not have many (If any) answers to combat us. I think we will win this 2-0 and one of the tests will be with a good deal of ease.

If i was a kiwi fan i will wonder about any new talent which can hit the ball at a faster rate then what currently in the top 6 at the moment.

No Mark wood ? Duckett should makes way for Johnny Bairstow, test specialist by Ashes series
No one is playing both the tests here and the ODIs in Bangladesh, and since Wood is (a) already with the one day squad and (b) presumably in the plans for the World cup team he's gone over there.

Bairstow's still injured. He broke his leg in September. If he were fit, he'd be in ahead of Dan Lawrence who is the reserve bat in this lineup.

England will play the same team as the last test in Pakistan but with Branderson returning for Ahmed and Wood, who are off to play one day cricket.

I wonder if Sodhi's performance in Pakistan will push Bracewell out. With Jamieson returning they could go

Top five
6. Blundell
7. Jamieson
8. Sodhi
9. Southee
10. Wagner
11. Henry/Tickner

But I expect they will keep Bracewell alongside 4 seamers to stack the lower middle order.

Boult should play the 2nd test; maybe they've still got that in mind.

As for me, I'm expecting Athlai's side but Tickner over Wagner.

KJ at 7 would be suicide. If Sodhi plays a pacer has to miss out and that's Wagner imo.

From an interview with Stead (which was mostly about the difficulty in replacing lord Colin):

"With two spinners there if it's dry - Mt Maunganui has been the pitch that has tended to deteriorate faster than other wickets in New Zealand. That's something that we have there.

"We also have Daryl Mitchell, that I guess in some way might have been under-bowled at times as an option for us to consider for us as a fourth seamer.

"That might change the structure of the playing XI a little bit."

Could see a tail of
Bracewell
Jamieson/Henry
Southee
Sodhi
Wagner

Still some concerns about Jamieson and whether he'll be ready, apparently

Interesting. Another article said Jamieson will just play the 1st test and miss the 2nd. Sodhi should bat 8 in that side - has the highest test and 1st class batting averages of the specialist bowlers (Henry 2nd).

Yes same. This article opened with Jamieson being under injury cloud but that was the reporters words, not Stead. I imagine Jamieson is a lock to play the first test unless he himself says he's not 100%

Don't bring logic into this. Southee should be batting 11, but that doesn't stop him

NZ XI squad:

Tom Bruce (c) (Central Stags)
Adi Ashok (Auckland Aces)
Jacob Cumming (Otago Volts)
Sean Davey (Canterbury)
Curtis Heaphy (wk) (Central Stags)
Kyle Jamieson (Auckland Aces)
Jarrod McKay (Otago Volts)
Robbie O’Donnell (Auckland Aces)
Will O’Donnell (Auckland Aces)
Quinn Sunde (Auckland Aces)
Sean Solia (Auckland Aces)
Theo van Woerkom (Canterbury)
Will Young (Central Stags)

Great to see Ashok there. If Young opens I'll be livid.

Some interesting choices, real mix of young and old.

Noone from ND or Wellington - there's an ND vs Otago T20 that clashes with this match and the Otago players in this XI won't play that format, which explain those absences. Not sure why Wellington players omitted other than bcoz Wellington.

Young in that XI suggests he's not in the NZ playing XI for the first test imo.
