**Official** England in New Zealand

Cloudy this morning guys, so if England decides to bowl, expect the same kind of swing they got on day 2.
By my calculations, this post should've been made at about quarter to nine in NZ. Which means hopefully the weather conditions will be able to be gauged accurately.

You get the feeling that if Sidebottom doesn't strike, you're basically relying on Broad and Anderson to get the batsmen out. The wicket will feel like a road to spinners if you don't strike early like the 1st shocker by New Zealand.

Broad is key here. If he performs in tantem with Sidebottom again, expect NZ batting to collapse for not many, or for NZ to bat for a long long time with rain coming into play.

With the cloud cover, I'm looking outside and it's a "oh my its going to rain" day today. There won't be much sun.

England would feel GUTTED if it rained and we ended up with a draw. In fact, Vettori will breath a sigh of relief, and both Matthews will be dropped definitely without a chance to redeem themselves like Strauss and Bell did. (edit again... lol)

England came to New Zealand at the start of the tour to win plenty and win them well. The fact that the tests came down to a few sessions where New Zealand performed appallingly can't be any consolation if you guys didn't win the Test series.

As I keep editting this waiting for the test to start, a bit of sun is sneaking through the clouds.

Interestingly, one more wicket gives Sidebottom 24 for the series, which works out at 8 a match, equivalent to Warne's 40 in the 05 Ashes. Obviously I am not saying he has bowled THAT well, and the greater consistency required for such a haul over 5 games compared to 3 shouldn't be understated, but at the same time, what a performance in the series.

Interested to see some stats for 3-match series with regards to wickets taken. Wonder if the fancy filters on cricinfo can help me.
No help from fancy filters, but...

35 - George Lohmann, South Africa v England, 1895/96
34 - Sydney Barnes, England v South Africa, 1912
33 - Richard Hadlee, Australia v New Zealand, 1985/86
32 - Harbhajan Singh, India v Australia, 2000/01
30 - Muttiah Muralitharan - Sri Lanka v Zimbabwe, 2001/02
30 - Abdul Qadir - Pakistan v England, 1987/88

Guys, just had a thought. Feel free to blast away at me for thinking such radical thoughts.

SHOULD Vettori open the test batting?

Think about the lineup if he does....

How
Vettori - sacrificial lamb... opps i mean captain.
Fulton
Taylor
Daniel Flynn (or another up and comer)
Grey Hair (Greg Hay)
Oram
McCullum (wk)
Mills
Southee (or Mason, Franklin etc..)
Martin

He's not taking wickets, and we have far too many middle order talent coming through with no openers. If he comes off, we'll be sure to get bigger totals thanks to an extra depth in batting. At the moment Vettori more often than not bats with bowlers which is a shame. If he doesn't come off at the top at least he's there for spinning.

He can do what McCullum did to our batting lineup in the ODIs... a revelation. (maybe...)

No, TBH. He's the best number-eight we've seen for a long time - maybe ever - and I'm more than happy with him there.

Opening is a job for openers. Craig Cumming to come back if Bell is dropped IMO.

Someone explain this logic to me?

Everyone is saying England will only bat for an hr or some other short set time.

So what does Vettori do? He starts with 2 spinners to give England as many overs as possible in that short time.

Needed to have the seamers on to slow the overrate down

Surely by getting in more overs now he'd reducing the amount of overs he has to face though? Or are you taking the (probably correct) stance that if New Zealand bat to the end of day five, they will win?

Arguably, the higher run-rate off the seamers would trade off the over rate, so runs per hour would not be dissimilar to that off the spinners.

That, and he may see very little point in needlessly giving extra overs to a 19-year-old.

EDIT: Also, spinners take wickets. Declare now...

Ambrose gone, nothing less than he deserves. Shame, I was really hoping they were going to get a few this morn, doesn't look remotely likely now.

I was hoping we'd bat on and set 600, but really there's not a hell of a lot of point in batting now. Hope the last 4 either slog us up to 550 or hit one straight up soon as poss, it's always boring seeing two tailenders at the crease together.
