Was announced on Radio Sport just now. Should be on the net very soon. I'll post the source.

But from what I heard Sinclair and Gillespie are gone. So Ryder is likely to be used at 6.

I'm glad we won't be seeing Gillespie bowling his rubbish, but surely they could have picked Mason instead of Hitchcock?

Sinclair seems to have got somewhat of a raw deal... again.

The Twenty20 squad is: Daniel Vettori (captain), Brendon McCullum (vice-captain/wicketkeeper), Jesse Ryder, Jamie How, Ross Taylor, Scott Styris. Jacob Oram, Peter Fulton, Kyle Mills, Paul Hitchcock, Chris Martin, Tim Southee.

The ODI squad is: Daniel Vettori (captain), Brendon McCullum (vice-captain/ wicketkeeper), Jesse Ryder, Jamie How, Ross Taylor, Scott Styris, Peter Fulton, Jacob Oram, Kyle Mills, Paul Hitchcock, Chris Martin, Michael Mason, Jeetan Patel.

Oh, right, Mason's in as well. OK.

Guess Hitchcock has only been picked as a Bond replacement. But surely there must be someone better?

hadlee made some comments about the selections on Radio Sport :

Hitchcock - Death specialist, will bat low down, used to NZ conditions
Ryder - Huge potential, got in on the back of 66 the other day - sounds like he will bat high up
Southee - Will offer NZ a lot in the future, so they think there is no need to delay his progress

picking hitchcock in the ODI squad is a step backwards. I am fine with him for the Twenty20 team but not to sure for the ODIs. Good to see Southee rewarded for some excellent bowling in the domestic Twenty20 competiton.

I think Hitchcock and Patel will be interchangeable depending on the conditions, and Ryder/Fulton being the same depending on form.

I also cannot fathom having Ryder and McCullum opening together, I prefer the McCullum and How partnership as How is the perfect foil for McCullum as he is steady and quick between the wickets, rotating strike for McCullum to attack. Then he can gradually build his innings and pick up his strike rate. Whereas McCullum and Ryder will both be out to attack and we could find ourselves more often than not, 20/2 rather than 50/1.

Either Phlegm's in with the in-crowd or he's a ****ed in the head as a certain John Bracewell.

Hitchcock's selection is frankly the sort of thing that makes me embarassed to be Kiwi. He's a nothing player. Yeah, he may be used at the death and he'll be carted. If Graham Napier can do it, and he's no where near the England ODI squad, think how someone like Mustard would do against him.

110% grade A **** selection.

Good to see Ryder get a shot, but I reckon he's on a hiding to nothing. Braces is hoping he'll fail so he can say "I told you so" about him. Southee should be in the ODI squad if he's in the 20:20 one.

So im guessing the lineup will be :

Ryder*, McCullum, How*, Styris*, Taylor*, Fulton, Oram, Vetorri, Hitchcock(Patel), Mills, Martin

Surprised to see Ryder get his Black Cap at last - he certainly doesn't deserve it based on either his form this season or throughout his career.

Yet again the selectors have chosen a batsman with a fine First Class record and a crap List-A record and thrown him into the ODI squad. When he fails, that's his whole career up the spout. I simply cannot believe that our selectors continue to make this fundamental error, year after year.

As for Hitchcock, the only suitable response is 8-)

You say this as if it's a problem unique to New Zealand. Happens pretty much everywhere, and it's one of the ultimate :wallbash: situations.

my ODI lineup

McCullum
How
Fulton
Styris
Taylor
Oram
Vettori
Mills
Mason
Martin
Hitchcock/Patel
Isn't that six bowlers?

Wouldn't it be better to have Hitchcock and Patel (or Martin) excluded and pick another batsman?

Or, given that batsman would be Ryder, maybe not?

EDIT: the entire squad contains just six batsmen. I can't believe that. Can only presume they're planning exceptionally flat surfaces.

Never heard of Southee myself  What sort of player is he? I take it he's a bowler?

Couldn't agree more with 16 tins of Spam's comment about Ryder. We should be used to these strange selections though. We've had them as long as I can remember.
