anyway good series victory. missed most of it but standard Hales. look awful for a few games especially against the straight swinging ball but capable of being pretty destructive when finding some form.

Still somewhat miffed that Hales hasn't got a chance in the ODI team even with the obvious technical shortcomings.

Pleased to see Buttler and Root doing well though.

Very quick change over to the ODI's on Sunday. Although Cook et all have been in the country for more than a week they've had no game time and it could be a struggle in the first ODI with so many new faces without gametime.

Realised it, which is why I laughed. Thought Dernbach was one of the worst death-bowlers at the recent world cup.

I don't have a massive problem with him playing t-20, but let's not pretend he's any good at it. He's just meh, whilst he's horrific at ODI, where many of those matches made him get the incremental contract.

Which is rather awarding crap cricket.

The points system should be based on performance, not just turn up to the ground and get your points.

Really not sure I fancy England this series. Real shortage of match practice for Cook, Bell and in particular Swann, Anderson and Trott who last played in the indian test matches over 2 months ago. England don't particulaly have the batsman in the top 4 to make use of the smaller boundaries. The bowlers will have to perform well.

If I was a betting man I'd really fancy NZ for this first match at least.

So who's staying up to watch? I like the look of the team Cricinfo suggested in their preview, and it's the one I'd go with.

1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Chris Woakes, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Anderson, 11 Steven Finn

Like the idea of 5 specialist bowlers in ODI's, and Woakes, Broad, Swann isn't a shocking 7-9.

Finn would be a shocking 9, though no doubt you mean Swann. Woakes' batting record in one-dayers is pretty awful, especially compared to his first-class stuff. Suggests he isn't really suited to a no.7 role. Reckon they'll struggle on 300 par wickets, as NZ have a more capable lower order with Franklin and NCullum.

That said, I think he can do more damage with the ball than someone like Patel can do with the bat so I'll go with it. With players like Bell, Trott and Root in the top order our best shot is to get early wickets and chase a low total in good bowling conditions.

Reckon I'll get an early night and get up early to watch the majority.

Yeah, I'm not sure why I wrote Finn...:unsure:

Hopefully with 5 specialist bowlers, England won't be having to chase 300 too often, although I do think most lower order batsmen's records in ODI's aren't reflective of their ability, as they often have to hit out from ball one and sacrifice themselves. Broad and Swann are surely better ODI batsman than their records suggest for instance, and if they batted higher would no doubt have a better record, as justified by Swann's record when batting up the order for Notts and Northamptonshire.

Brez would be handy though of course, since he's the only England bowler who's ever made a major contribution with the bat in ODI's.

Agree, I was just so disappointed with the lack of intent from Guptill on Friday. To me it was obvious we'd lose that game after about 4 overs of our batting. You just can't afford to waste that many deliveries upfront. You can't allow bowlers like Finn to just scroll in and bowl short of a length without trying to use your feet, or backing away to leg or off, or even attempting a lap shot.

Yeah not much getting away from that, I do think that Swann should be a much better one than he is though.

I am a big fan of 5 specialist bowlers anyway, definetly think it is what they should go with for the Champions Trophy.
