Well we didn't bowl well at all. So I'm happy New Zealand made it a better day than it should have been for us!

Bashir didn't bowl a 4fer day, but Leach wouldn't have taken wicket on that so a good call on selection!
Nice for the boot to be on the other foot, normally it’s us letting teams get easy wickets

Dreamt that Woakes got a wicket first ball to Southee, bowled, and Atkinson the fourth ball of O'Rourke lbw with no runs being scored.

For all the spinner’s graveyard talk, opposition slow bowlers do have their moments - Lyon and Maharaj to name two. Not all that surprising that Bashir took a bunch, though sounds like NZ gifted away a fair few.

he maybe the biggest HTB of all time. i can' think of anyone with such an insanely distorted home v away record. he is a better bowler in england than anderson and broad. away from home, i reckon 75% of eligible english seamers in county cricket would put up better numbers.
Was thinking that yesterday...if he was a spinner, who averaged 55+ away from home (ie a subcontinent spinner) you wouldn't think for a second about playing him. OK, Hagley, where it can do a bit, but honestly it's Woakes who shouldn't have a passport, not Ollie Robinson. I'd have security at Heathrow, if I was an England employee, specifically to make sure Chris Woakes doesn't arrive on site. I guess the ability to bat gets him ahead of Potts but surely he doesn't play on pretty flat ones at Hamilton and the Basin.

He's got some tools - tall guy, mixes his pace up, and started to group them a lot better as the day went on. Blundell and Smith both failed to get over theirs with the extra height, Henry got spooked by the new ball around the corner and Rachin...well that was just awful. That's where we lost the ability to have complete ascendancy, given England got very little out of Woakes and Stokes was pretty inconsistent as well.

Even that last bit is questionable. His batting has gone downhill recently whilst Potts managed a FC ton this season and is no mug. I think Potts would've bowled really well on that too. We could've left Woakes out and still had players with FC Tons at 8, 9 & 10.

he's passed 50 eight times in his test career, once away from home. it just doesn't stand up to reason, especially when carse and atkinson are also in that 8-11 space.

From what I'm reading it seems that quality of bowling had little correlation with wicket taking so far.
Only a couple of wickets. Well 3, maybe 4 😂.

Bashir first, the leg slip catch off the debutante. Williamson chucking his ton away and the bizarre Mitchell shot off Carse.

All told its hard to tell who is on top as it is meant to be cloudier today so may be harder to bat when we do.

BC’s batsmen sensed conditions were in their favour with the English attack being serviceable rather than threatening, but just couldn’t restraint their attacking mindset to be a little more judicious about the shots they played. The old David Trist comment about being ‘over aroused’ comes to mind.

Three of them. I think it was McMillan who said, when Bashir came on to bowl for the first time, that he did alright in Pakistan. Gower, while trying to be diplomatic in their reply, was pretty much saying, are you having a laugh.

Can't wait to see him bowl. Part of the excitement of the game is seeing people you have never heard of play to see what they can do.

Not sure I hold the same feelings for Bethell though.
When Bethell's graphic stats came up and the commentators were trying to explain the selection, as it's a difficult one, they mentioned that at the age of 12, Lara said Bethell was better than he was at the same age. That was pretty much it. Fingers crossed.

Is this a classic "just gets flatter" pitch?
It seemed pretty flat, but had spongy bounce. Expect that bounce to normalize.

Normally the spongy bounce makes scoring quite slow, but nz rattled along.

Tbf, 3 of the wickets were contributed by that bounce: Kane, Blundell, and if being charitable Smith.

Even Ravindra's full toss was contributed by the maglev nature of the pitch that refused to let that ball bounce in the first place.

Also ...he's done *ok* at T20s.

And plays golf.

Watched the first session and a half. Pretty good deck (not a road yet), but England's bowling was inconsistent. Think that will be a feature of the series. An attack in transition abroad with dynamics that don't lend themselves to relentless, probing control. Can see several of the wickets coming from good balls out of nothing and improvisational bursts instead of building conventional pressure.

The batting is the better and more experienced suit and must step up. Root/Brook can definitely go big and there are lots of capable support acts right the way down to no10. NZ's batting lineup is pretty clinical when bowling isn't penetrative (encapsulated by Kane), so handing out a few gifts yesterday was rather unexpected. Bashir's 4-fer was shades of Bess in SL. Elsewhere, Kane and Mitchell not getting on top of the bounce led to their demises. Some pace in the pitch and England batsmen need to be mindful of that.

Think the new ball phase could be rough for England up against a more experienced attack in the conditions getting the ball in the right areas more consistently, but NZ's bowling depth for this test isn't great and England bat very deep in this Test so I'm fairly hopeful. Runs definitely there to be had v the old ball. Can't see there being much lateral movement after the new ball burst and Southee is a major target.

England could do with wrapping up the last two wickets quickly (something they notoriously struggle to do) before going big. The 3rd innings in New Zealand is particularly tough for bowlers and it has scuppered us a couple of times. A decent lead is ideal but need application before thinking about that.
