**Official** England in New Zealand 28 Nov-18 Dec 2024 - 3 Tests

There’s no guarantee that Southee would come out and smash two 6’s. He’s equally likely to be clean bowled or hit one ‘straight up’. Does he deserve a batting record after a career of reckless slogging when he could have knuckled down for the bloke at the other end? 🤔
Maybe they wanted to wait for the new ball to be taken to make it easier for him to send that ball travelling.

Bashir and Brook are chucking pies....never a better time.

Does Rachin make the decision though or is it a team plan? If Stead and Latham say that O'Rourke is going out there maybe Rachin could sprint out in front of him in a race to the crease(?) In any case, it's none of Englands business, O'Rourke doesn't need them to take great umbrage on his behalf.
Well that's my question - I don't know whose call it is. If it's Rachin's, it's weak. If it's Latham's or Stead's, it's also weak but it puts Rachin in a real invidious spot. I presume it's a team edict, that they must have a night watchman with a certain amount of overs before the close. I hate it

And of course it's England's business! It's not on behalf of O'Rourke, it's having a go at Rachin for sending in a tailender to do his job.

I was there on Kane's FC debut against Auckland when in fading light, James Marshall let Kane go out to face Andre at his domestic peak, then used Bucko Martin as a night watchman, then had to come in himself after both were done over. I've never heard sledging like it.

Why aren't Atkinson and Potts bowling?
I think i heard Carse has a niggle?

You would think England have been ground to dust by a marathon batting display. It's only been two 90ish over innings.

Pathetic. I'd be embarrassed by their sulking leadership.

Actually, I wouldn't really. Reminds me a bit of myself, bit of a sook, and give up when I'm losing.

“Oooeeerrr…it’s a dead rubber”. I thought every test match was important? NZ were desperate to white wash India, 3 - 0 is so much better that 2 - 1. Sounds like this England outfit don’t give a toss and don’t have the killer instinct great teams have, so on that basis I expect them to get hosed in the next Ashes series. Verdict: lazy and would rather be golfing.
I was about to say the exact thing. I said earlier on when we were 2-0 up that this showing doesn't really give me much confidence for the Ashes and watching this I'm even less confident

Over analysis I think, fact is Southee is on 98 sixes and NZ are in declaration batting mode where runs aren't an issue at this stage, would cost nothing to let Southee have a go at the record. I mean Southee's selection is based on sentimentality instead of form so you might aswell allow him to try for 100 sixes.

Is there any talk about declaring? Barring weather, this is the kind of situation where you try bat the opposition into the ground.

You could make a case that the WTC was still in play and it benefited NZ chances to go for the 3-0 and the way the 3rd Test worked out, it didn't get into the realms of over-working the bowlers.

But in relation to this Test I think England had the mindset of not wanting to over-load their pace attack and risk injury after their big overs in NZs 1st Innings given they've already taken the series. And how quickly they came out again for the 2nd Innings (given they only batted for 35 overs).
That would require acknowledgement of the radical take that batting time for time’s sake does sometimes have value!

So he’s been absolutely shithouse for 5 years now?

I can forgive one or two years at the end of someone’s career when it comes to rating a player if their form has dropped away. But 5 years in what should’ve been his prime, nah. That counts and should be held against him.
Hardly had any cricket in 2020, and was great in 2023 (55.91 average with 2 centuries).

So, basically 3 bad years.

Lead 612 now.

2 days to bat for English batsmen provides that small opportunity for someone to finally break George Headley's record of the highest score in the 4th innings- 223 runs.
