**Official** England in New Zealand 28 Nov-18 Dec 2024 - 3 Tests

An interesting lineup to say the least.

You've arguably got better FC batsman at 8-10 than at 3!

Well, what to say about that? We may have accidentally stumbled across the best place for Pope to bat, although it will be a challenge for him if he has to take the gloves before coming out to bat. Bethell at 3 absolutely reeks of Dan Lawrence opening, the only good thing being that one Test shouldn’t be enough time to scramble his brain to the extent poor Lawrence’s was by the end of that Sri Lanka series. Stokes at 7, batting with the tail, I like that, it’s not as if it’s a massively different role to what he’s used to anyway

Bethell's record isn't much to look at in any format but he's shown enough so far in the shorter form I suppose to show that he won't be fazed. Maybe he'll surprise us. I'd rather see a property keeper at seven though. Bashir playing is the biggest surprise. Stokes must be fit to bowl. I'd take the fourth seamer and Root to bowl some spin over three plus Bashir.

I think it's appalling that neither Root/Stokes fronted up to bat 3.

Sending a barely 21 year old out who's not even managed well at FC at 5 is really terrible management.

There's trying to give someone their chance to shine and then there's plain stupidity. It already failed with Lawrence and Roy in the past. It's just disrespectful to test cricket, we even saw an ATG in Smith fail trying to do a job he was not suited for.

Adults in the room need to rethink this. They had zero intention of playing Bethell until 2 days ago. Pope would have batted 3 and Cox 7. So stick to that plan with the debutant where they really should be at 7.

I of course don't wish to see Bethell fail and hope he does well. But I honestly don't want McCullum/Stokes to think they can just keep doing this.
The management clearly don't believe in conventions and specialist roles to the extent of going unnecessarily radical. I suspect Root offered to bat 3 but Stokes definitely isn't interested in that while he wants to bowl.

U19s Cricket World Cup final: Jacob Bethell's journey from Barbados to Warwickshire - BBC Sport I just found this old article about Bethell. Although he is clearly talented, I didn't realise that he was such a prospect. All I seemed to know about him prior to this autumn was that he was quite high profile in the 16.4 comp.

He may well have all the talent in the world at white ball.

But he's got a SR of 45 in FC cricket so clearly he's struggled with the step up in red ball. To suddenly think he's capable of batting 3 in a test in spring in NZ against a formidable attack.

Is just utter stupidity from the management and desperately unfair on Bethell. No doubt with the overconfidence of youth he's stuck his hand up.

Picking Bashir is probably also going to be a complete waste of time too

This is all we have to go off in test cricket this early at Hagley.

I definitely didn't say it was a good call, I was just trying to find any information about Bethell beyond him having played for the white ball side.

From what I see of the weather forecast it is largely going to be almost English like, late May weather, which if you consider the seasons are reversed, is nigh on equivalent.

Not sure CDG should be able to skittle a side but at least he's retired given he is Joe Root's kryptonite.

Loved that Southee and Boult were all that was needed in the first innings and Anderson and Broad did the same in their first innings

No.3 is such a vital position in Test cricket, it's almost galling to see that treated with disdain by picking a debutant there that clearly doesn't have the game to make it work.

However, on balance, if you don't want your best batsman there because you think his best run output is at 4, Pope isn't going to keep and bat 3, and Stokes isn't going to captain, try to bowl and do that job, then I can see the logic... the logic being Bethall is a sacrificial lamb, sorta like Moeen in the Ashes but much more likely to fail

If he fails it effectively means Root is batting at 3. Remember Vaughan's test debut in South Africa, batted at 4, but was in at the end of the second over 2-2 fast becoming 2-4 when Stewart and Butcher were also out. https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...rica-vs-england-1st-test-63860/full-scorecard

Seeing all this Bethell will probably do well this match/series
Agreed.
Afterall Bethell's good, to quote Michael Vaughan: "Jacob Bethel .. Serious young player .. His dad used to be my captain at Sheffield Collegiate."

But agree with @Fuller Pilch .... It will be interesting if he gets a big score, Pope fails, and then the specialist keeper arrives.

I hope he does. Everyone says he has the game, but will he bazball it, or play proper Test Cricket? Wonder how success will be judged?
