**Official** England in New Zealand 28 Nov-18 Dec 2024 - 3 Tests

Pothas

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
His batting has been his stronger suit. If anything his bowling has got worse than it's been in the past for Durham.

But I think the point is we've long tried to pick players based on being able to perform in England but not go for players better suited to away.

They've seen attributes rather than looked at form. His job has been to try and bowl fast for Durham and be a second change to Rushy/Raine/Potts who over his time generally do most of the damage with the new ball. Pitches and conditions don't generally reward that type of bowling in April/May/September. So at times he's been expensive doing a job that wasn't going to reward him.

But we've seen these away pitches definitely suiting him so far. England might have had a bowler for the Ashes all along, while they've persisted with people like Woakes for 2 series there!

With the 4 rounds of Kookaburra games being now June,July and August I believe,it would have been interesting to see how he'd fare in that event. But can't really see him turning out much for Durham next season.

The betting thing hanging over him definitely affected him at the start of last season mind. He clearly knew that was coming as his batting was in the bin too, after having a superb season in 2023 with the bat. His 104* last season when he came back from his ban at Ciderabad. Was a top quality innings of a guy capable of batting 6 in the CC imo.
Yeah absolutely understand picking on type but you would still just expect someone who has looked this good to have a better average in first class cricket, even if they are playing a particular role. Really interested to see if he can keep this up and what he does if he plays Tests in England.

One thing I never expect us to struggle with in this era is a smallish chase. Bethell will have tougher days ahead but has done himself no harm there. @Molehill said he would never play another test so he’s wrong once again
I did say would it be ridiculous to suggest he won’t play another Test….it probably was. But was based on Robinson coming in and Pope back to 3….not sure they change it now.

I'd love to see us playing a number XI with that on his cv. Just for the sake of it.
We've definitely had XIs in the last five years with Stuart Broad at 11, so a Test and FC centurion occupying the spot hasn't been too unusual.

I'm not sure whether England have fielded a team with FC hundreds in every position. The 2020 team vs the Windies with Woakes-Curran-Bess-Broad from 8 down nearly managed it, but Curran didn't get a three figure score for Surrey until a couple of years later.

*In test matches.

In ODIs this has happened loads of times thanks to lower orders of four or more of Moeen/Woakes/Willey/Plunkett/Jordan/Rashid in some arbitrary order.

apparently Carse 10fer was the first by a seamer for england abroad since Sidebottom 2008 also in NZ, and by any since monty in 2012. it seems
anderson and borad never managed this abroad.
