*Official* England in New Zealand 2019

What a truly affirming piece of news this would be for our faith in humanity if this were true.

Spend all that much money and fly the way to NZ just so you can racially abuse your own ****ing team.
Would suspect him to be an English migrant tbh. We get more immigrants from England than any other country, IIRC.

I really hope we go in with the 4 seamers. Southee, Wagner, Henry and Ferguson. It sounds like our selectors obsession with all-rounders will kick in though and Mitchell will play. I think he's a decent player, don't get me wrong, just feel like it's the wrong move.
While it's obviously better to focus on the current game and not look too far ahead (expecting England to bounce bacl strongly, they'll be hurting after that defeat), having a four pronged seam attack would also work as a good test run for who makes the starting lineup in Perth if Boult is out. It's quite possible the selectors may be tempted to move Santner up to 7.

i'd play mitchell/ferguson here and at perth too. i don't want us rushing guys back half fit. remember boult at brisbane?

this is a great chance for england to hit back.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
I'm one of the biggest Henry fans but even I think his reselection is a bit off if it's true. Love him but Fergusons just got that intangible x-factor that we need a bit of.

That said, he could also be as successful as Shaun Tait. Such is that sort of thing.

Personally I'm just jazzed Wagner is now #3 in the world and that I didn't realise India were playing two tests next year. What a summer!

Yeah, even just looking at their current form in the plunket shield, it's a bit of a no contest. Henry with 9 wickets in 3 games at 40 apiece hardly screams pick me. Picking up 4/23 against a good Wellington batting lineup on the other hand does (against the same team, at the same venue, Henry managed 3/100). I'm normally hesitant to opt for untested pace over accuracy and skill, but I really don't think it should be that close a call, even if the surface is dry and slow (which it isn't, at least according to the cricinfo report).

Also agreed on Wagner. That cricinfo article on him this morning was lovely.

Can't wait for the next test to start. By all accounts looks like they are going to use the steep bounce track for the test match. I hear it's bit green as well... The first day will be crucial, the ball will do fair bit first session no doubt.

I think it's quite a straight swaps for BCs, Ferguson will come in for Boult and Darryl Mitchell for CDG. I don't think they are going to play Matt Henry.

Root will win the toss, he always does, it is written.

So, make it 2 days worth of green, or not green at all.

I had actually thought about CdG's role in the team a while ago, before his injury, and wondered about how/who you replace him if injured.

My internal conclusion is that I would have replaced him with a specialist batsman, his role is true allrounder and I doubt that role can be replaced currently. So, I concluded revert to 6 batsmen. But, Santner complicates that.

Good luck to Mitchell. I haven't paid much attention to him last few years. Back when I did do some spotting, I recall he was really more starting v spin in white-ball cricket. And had his Perth-raised Ponting imitation cracking pull shot off the quicks.

Looking ahead. Would be 4D chess if he got a Perth test match with his upbringing. Although I think I'd go Phillips at 6, bowl some part time off-breaks, and 4 seamers.

Mitchell at home in Hamilton may be a good horses for course pick, I guess. I remember thinking that about CdG on his debut.(a green-top speciaist is what I thought he was). Never dreamed he would kick ass for 3 years and be a permanent pick.

As an aside, I'm guessing Kane's lower back tweak means he won't be bowling much.

Hopefully Mitchell will do a Neesham/CDG and have a good first outing. Will be good to have some more competition as successor of the Lord.

Thinking about some similarities with Stokes and Mitchell.

Both what you'd loosely classify as number 6 batting allrounders. Both left NZ about the same age because their Dads had landed an overseas rugby coaching job.

Differences:
1. Mitchell came back at about 19, but his Dad never has. Opposite for Stokes, his parents moved back but Stokes stayed.
2. Stokes is way, way better.

Jos Buttler an injury doubt for the second Test v NZ after tweaking his back in the gym this morning. Ollie Pope will take the gloves if he doesn't recover. Zak Crawley could come in for a Test debut if so. Chris Woakes an outside possibility too.

I dont know what I'm more proud of, my kids or the widespread use of Lord as I originally dubbed him (and he now lives up to)

So Bairstow has gone back to England? IIRC he was kept on as standby for the Whangarei warm-up games.

Note that this time last year Eng touring squad had Bairstow (wk) + Foakes (2nd wk) + Buttler.
