Played Nicholls. Another really classy innings against good opposition on a tricky surface. Think he's here to stay.

Don't forget we've potentially got 60+ overs at them under lights whether permitted. All we need is a lead of around 340, and then potentially 150 overs all up to bowl them out. A NZ win is still the favourite outcome imo.
But the 'under the lights' thing comes down to having the new ball for full value, surely? So if you want the new ball under lights then that means you only have four sessions to bowl them out, which on this pitch is maybe leaving it a little fine...

That's a good hundred when you consider, overall, batting hasn't been too easy.

Just need to do it more often pls.

Yeah, normal test and I'd agree with Athlai actually. England potentially batting against Boult under lights at like 8pm makes it a harder task though.

I don't get this, why are some people suddenly assuming this is a batsman's paradise? It's not quit as lively as it was on day 1, but there's still plenty there for the bowlers. I'd say par is 300 at most.

I'm not assuming that at all, I'm english and I saw the first innings for Christ's sake   Just don't see the purpose in taking any unnecessary risks from a NZ standpoint, it's not like England are ever going to pull miles in front and have enough time to bowl you lot out.

Incidentally NZ still still strong favs with Sky sports UK betting.

NZ win paying $1.36 vs. $3.52 for the draw & ($200 for an Eng win :p )

****ing. Declare.
Disagree, there's 65 overs left today (minus 3-4 innings change), & at least 97 tomorrow, with the weather looking fine.

Why not look for a lead of 340-350 if possible which will pretty much rule out NZ having to bat twice. The current lead of 294 with 160 overs remaining isn't quite enough to assure that.

Agreed. Wouldn't fancy chasing a 100 in 15-20 overs under lights. As long as we're scoring at a good clip, stay out there for another 45 minutes imo.

There is also the issue of bowling under the lights. They may want a harder ball for the early party of the evening session, so batting closer to 5:30 pm makes sense, gives Southee + Boult pre-"lunch" and post-"lunch" spells with a ball < 20 overs old.

Top innings Nicholls.

Tricky with the declaration when in many ways we'd like a ball that's not too old for the night session. On pure runs we should be declaring now, but then you wonder if we're giving England too much of the nicer batting conditions.

Maybe bowl 10 overs at the end of this session?

I think Southee’s batting really has improved this season. He’s played himself in quite nicely today.

I think the only reason New Zealand are batting on is that the bean counters don't want to take the risk of the match finishing today
