Larsen saying Guptill has been batting in the middle order ... from what I can see he’s played one Plunket Shield this season, in November vs ND, and he batted three. Got 8 and 52* in the second innings chasing 72 to win.

Last season from memory he opened early in the season and then got injured. (Edit: two Plunket Shield game’s in 2016/17, November, both opening).

Does Larsen have a clue what he’s talking about?

I think last season Guptill moved to middle order for Auckland after he got dropped from the test opening gig. I don't know how many games he played though.

But, it's a curse of the fringe or single form specialist blackcap when you have a badly structured domestic season. You don't play a variety of forms in domestic cricket. Or in Matt Henry's case you just don't ever play.

This is going to be a very interesting DN game given that nearly all the quicks from both sides are more or less swing bowlers. Can't see this going beyond 3 days.

I guess Brownlie is out of the picture completely now? As I recall till a year ago he was the "standby batsman who can bat anywhere in the order" then in the South Africa series it was Broom who came in when Taylor did get injured.
The lack of younger batsmen (looking at you Will Young) coming through is sure having its effect.

Can you elaborate on your first paragraph? " thinking the white and the pink ball are similar" Is that comment in re: to Guptill? or both Guptill and Astle?
Meant for just Guptil. Astle's best format is red ball cricket IMO. It's been said the pink ball can play like the white, hence the comment around the selectors thinking Guptil is the best option.

In regards to Brownlie, he is averaging 28 this year in long form cricket. That + age means you can put a line through him, unless the selectors re-do a Broom situation.

Surprised Munro seems to be in the doghouse. At what point do you ignore his technique and just realise that he scores a ****ton of runs and has solid international pedigree?

He pretty much retired from First Class cricket a few weeks ago.

I really hope Astle bowls well in this game. I want to see one of his hilarious lbw appeals in high def before he retires.
