So for England it may boil down to Bresnan v Onions, imo, with Bresnan just ahead. If both were fit and in form it's a difficult decision, but this decision may be clouded by the fact that Onions hasn't played too much while on this tour so far and Bresnan looked well below his best in his only Test so far.
When fully fit Bresnan will bowl all day, bowl a heavy ball, and gain reverse swing to make him equally dangerous with the older ball. He will be constantly at the batsman, as Onions generally will be. Onions will bowl a tight off stump line looking just for a hint of seam to trouble the batsman, at decent pace. It's certainly a very decent position to be in with bowlers such as Steve Finn and Stuart Broad likely to be ruled out.
Consistency would see Bresnan selected, it wasn't long ago he was England's lucky charm, but since his elbow problems he has lost that bit of nip meaning he has lost some of his threat and effectiveness. His batting is a bonus, but this comes down to who will be the most effective bowler on the Nagpur deck. With reverse swing being well executed by messrs Anderson and Finn in Kolkata, Bresnan is the more likely of the two to find a similar threat in Nagpur.
For me it comes down to if Bresnan has regained his nip, and there is only net sessions to ascertain if he has, England are in an excellent and fortunate position if he hasn't to call on a bowler of similar quality in Onions.
