So, Ojha is now ahead of both Swann and Anderson in ICC rankings...

1 858 D.W. Steyn
2 838 H.M.R.K.B. Herath
3 832 V.D. Philander
3 832 Saeed Ajmal
5 767 P.P. Ojha
6 755 G.P. Swann
7 752 B.W. Hilfenhaus
8 741 M. Morkel
9 740 P.M. Siddle
10 727 J.M. Anderson

Four slow bowlers in the top 6 - must have been a while since we've seen that.

The ICC rankings have never been about who the best bowler is atm, it's more about who's performed well and consistently for a period of time.

I get Herath being ranked where he is - but Ojha? May as well have Panesar there cause he got Tendulkar twice going by the criteria.

I've always thought the opposite tbh - all based on current form. That's why you get abnormalities like Kula being ranked 1 in ODI's.

The ODI rankings have other problems, biggest of which is that economy rates count for a lot but aren't adjusted for the match situation. So medium pacers who tend to bowl entirely in the first 30 overs like Kula - or half decent orthodox spinners who only bowl the middle overs like Hafeez - are rated as though they can bowl at under 4 an over bowling at the death, when the fact that they can't/won't bowl at the death is the main reason their economy rates are so good in the first place.

As second spinner, Ojha has only been picked when conditions are in his favour. It's a better job than Ashwin, who has had to carry the load in Australia, for example.

indian bowling attack comparable to that of bangers

England in India 2012-13 : India's bowling not a new problem | Cricket Features | India v England | ESPN Cricinfo

Starting July 21 last year, India have been the worst bowling unit of all Test sides bar Bangladesh. At least statistically so. Not only have they averaged 40.39 with the ball, better only than Bangladesh, they have give away more runs per over than any Test side over that period. And whisper it, for most of this period India have bowled on "green tops".

IIRC they had worse batting and bowling averages than Bangladesh did on their recent respective tours of England.

Well one thing that is an absolute disgrace, is not giving Zaheer proper new ball spells, he's quality, shouldn't be relegated because of how awful England are at spin. Give him the first few overs idjits.

Like most of us, I don't give a rat's arse about official ranking lists.

Monty is nowhere near this top ten, and rightly so. Yet, would he have been an Indian (let's not get started about a discussion he actually is), or a Pakistani or a Sri Lankan, he very well might be.

Is it a totally ****ed up idea to think Swann & Panesar are a better spinner pair than Ojha & Ashwin?
