***Official*** England in India 2016/17

Eh, anything that happens in the last over with <10 to win and two specialist bats in can be called potentially game breaking just on principle.
A specialist bat who was on 38 from 38 and didn't manage to lay bat on ball of the given bowler's previous over? I mean yeah anything *can* happen, but evidence will suggest that it wasn't really a huge blow to England.

lol, without Root's dismissal we have Buttler on strike needing 7 off 5 rather than 6 off 3. Not to mention Kohli being given an extra 20 runs quickly + taking pressure off Rahul early.

Incorrect!
Buttler came on strike needing 7 off 4! But without the LBW, he would've been on strike needing 7 off 5 balls. Not a huge difference.

And remind me how he performed against Bumrah? Couldn't even come CLOSE to laying bat on ball.. In the last over-- he managed a clueless dot followed by ..cluelessly being clean bowled.

Plus, likewise in Bumrah's previous over, he only got 1 run off the first 3 balls.. So..

England lost and would have lost regardless!

Casually ignoring Kohli adding 20 runs. England can't blame umpiring decisions as they still should have won the game and choked but I don't think India are close without them tbh

Im surprised Morgan hasn't been reprimanded or fined for his comments.

I can't remember any team in the last few years.. doing what Morgan & co are doing ..complaining about it to the match referee!

And a ploy to put added pressure on the Indian umpires for the next game. Won't be surprised if the umpires are hesitant in the next game to give the English guys out even when they are more or less plumb, but in a short T20 game, idk if such occasions will arise again.

It wasn't long ago when a couple of poor decision a game was usually the norm and players would almost always accept the umpiring errors and move on. But all this technology has inflated the Ego's of the players, and greatly diminished their acceptance and tolerance.

Come on...

Kohli would have been out on 7 off 8 balls, instead ended up with 21 off 15 balls. Additional 14 runs off 7.

But you have casually ignored that the Yuvraj decision led to an 'additional' 6 or more dot balls.. which cancels out the scoring rate gain provided by the Kohli decision..

And it wasn't really about the wickets either as Dhoni was not required until the very end. India lost 3 wickets in the last 3-4 deliveries, as due to Manish Pandey's awfulness resources were under utilised. It was similar to how Root hindered England's scoring rate.. The decision was a blessing in disguise for him tbh as it put him out of his misery as he was really struggling.. would have been blamed for the loss if he'd not been given out wrongly. Thank you umpire.

stop defending bad umpiring decisions. 91Jmay's reaction was over the top straight after the match (though I can understand why, sometimes as a fan we get carried away immediately after the fact) but these posts are just silly now. The Root wicket was big, anyone watching knows that. Should England have won despite the wicket? Yes. But it still had a major impact.

**** off, Eoin.
Look, clearly tests > the rest, but bad decisions in any international can cost a person their career no? There is just as much on the line in terms of money and impact on career for players.

Obviously these T20s are meaningless from a results point of view, but from a player's point of view, particularly those that are new to international cricket, it can be massive.

Imagine how different Stoinis' life may be following his innings, as opposed to if he was sawn off on 50. His life may be different (international selection, endorsements, money, international T20 leagues recruitment etc.) based on what was clearly a meaningless ODI between Aus and NZ.

No, it did not though! You perhaps were not watching how awful he had been to both Bumrah as well as Nehra. Was either playing and missing or totally mis-timing his shots.. sky'd two of his last few deliveries, lucky to still be there. I am stating facts, while the majority of the English team and media is blowing it out of proportion, although level headed people realise that it was not as significant a thing.

Yes he was crap. How does that change that (1) denying them a single, (2) bringing a new batsman to the crease on a tricky pitch and (3) not having Butler on strike on the second ball not a big deal when they only needed 8 off 6? They stuffed it up but bad umpiring is bad umpiring and an incorrect decision with 8 off 6 needed has a major impact on the game.

This is outrageous.

Why are you asking me that? I'm defending Morgan. I'm stating that all international cricket is meaningful to the players playing it. If anything, whilst Morgan's umpiring wahhh is pretty lame, the fact Morgan is so upset about the loss is a good thing imo.

Perhaps I should expand on my broader point. If Manish Pandey or Rahul had been given out wrongly, I doubt I would've even cared. It does not matter.
Cricket is a game of fine margins filled with luck, a lot of luck! So you move on...
For eg, edges get you out rather than play and misses- which actually happen to be a far bigger mistake/misjudgment. It is pretty illogical in some sense. A batsman who genuinely play and misses 13 times & gets a hundred is praised over a batsman whose first mistake has him edged and caught on 42, even though edging a ball requires less misjudgment than missing a ball. So how on earth play and misses not penalised in any way .. So this is a game filled with luck and uncertainty, so I don't see how players have any right to call out poor umpiring decisions when the game itself is quite luck ridden. You just move on. An umpire does not cost you the game, luck and your own misjudgment does.

that is a completely different point to your previous 2 or 3 posts. I'm not going to argue with any of that. But the simple question of "did the umpire's bad decisions have a significant impact on that game of cricket?" can only be answered with a yes.

Obviously we just move on and hope for better umpiring in the next game, but all I was stating was any justification that it didn't impact the match because Root was batting crap is just downright silly.

To add to that, I think all international cricket also have meaning to those watching it. The fact that Jmay is so upset is proof of that.
