i love this thing in cricket where we describe an unthreatening spinner as someone who can contain and build pressure.

liam dawson goes at over 3 RPO in first class cricket.
But that has to be their thought process by picking Dawson does it not? I'm not saying I agree that's what he'll do, but I'm fairly certain they don't think he's going to rip through the Indian top 6 with a plethora of ripping turners to clean them up.

i'm pretty sure the thought process is 'multi dimensional cricketer'.

i sincerely hope a group of highly paid professionals are not picking a guy who goes at 3.16 an over in county cricket to contain virat kohli and che pujara.

In fairness to Dawson there's a fair chance he'll be a step up from Ansari/Batty in every aspect. I mean, it's worrying that this should have become a selection criteria, but oh well.

so wait on who out of dawson and jennings are expected to play... just dawson or both?
Jennings should open the batting in place of Hameed. Whether Dawson plays is up to what team we go for but I can't see Batty playing so either Broad or Dawson for him.

Yes his batting is a bonus in that respect, but I'm talking purely about his bowling and trying to find a reason for his inclusion. Bottom line is the selectors are going to struggle whoever they pick if they're looking for a spinner, due to the lack of decent options.

could lengthen the batting imo with moeen, rashid, and root as your relief spinner

that's probably a horrid idea lol

Worth remembering that England picked a replacement for a part time prank cricketer like Ansari which is why they went for Dawson. If they were replacing Batty, who they probably still believe is the best spinner after Rashid/Ali, then they'd have probably gone for Leach?

I wouldn't have thought so beause they would then have had three spinners in Ansari, Rashid and Leach that all turn the ball the same way.

Just play the following for the next test, it's really not ****ing hard, after the UAE we should have learnt to never play 3 spinners, let alone 2, but thankfully Rashid has improved a lot.

Cook
Jennings
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Moeen
Buttler
Woakes
Rashid
Broad
Anderson

Moeen and Buttler can be in either position, it really doesn't matter, but we can't be batting Moeen at 4, it's simply far too early for his style which is so loose.

"England have a shallow talent pool and they aren't after the best specialist: they are after a left-arm option who can bat, field and will be low-maintenance on and off the pitch." - George Dobell, Cricinfo (on why Dawson was picked over Leach)

Ignoring that they weren't after "the best specialist", which is bad enough as it is, I don't think I've ever seen "is low maintenance" being touted as a reason for someone to have an opportunity to play for their country. Is "would he make a good housemate / stable boyfriend after a bad break-up?" now part of the criteria for the English selectors when picking someone?

Whatever it takes!!!

Are you actually suggesting the England selectors reserve 1 spot on the touring squad for a part time prank cricketer? And then ensure he plays in the XI? :p
