Cricket Web A v England A
at CWBCC Stadium
Captain Sean Fuller was seen with his head buried firmly in his hands after the third and final day of the match at the CWBCC Stadium, where the A team suffered a hammering unlike any other seen on Cricket Web soil this year. Apart from a blazing first knock from Andrew Garven, no Webhead seemed to turn up with matchwinning performances, while England A had plenty.
It had started well for Fuller, when he won the toss and bravely opted to bat under ominous skies against English swing bowlers. It was to prove costly - after Fitzsimmons and Smith had put on 36, Fitzsimmons got an outside nick to Owais Shah at second slip, and Fuller, coming in at three, played Anderson's next delivery horribly, ending with a top edge to captain Solanki at backward point.
At 36 for 2, England A had the start they wanted, but Smith, Blackman and Garven (who came in when Smith perished for 36) attacked before lunch to put the Webheads somewhat back on track - especially against Alex Wharf, whose nine first-day overs cost sixty-four runs. However, Gareth Batty got his only wicket of the day by dismissing Blackman for 44, and hard work from Kabir Ali in his second spell earned him two wickets amid showvers, to send the hosts to 193 for 6. Garven refused to give up on his attacking tactics, though, earning his century before rain brought an early tea, and it took a straight one from Loudon to dismiss him - after Hancock had driven him expansively through the covers for 35 in Loudon's previous over. Anderson then cleaned up the tail with a brace, and Cricket Web A were all out for 291.
Everyone knew England A's batting line-up were strong, and that they would have a tough time of dismissing them. However, the long post-tea session on the first day showed weaknesses in the Cricket Web bowling line-up - the seamers bowled too short, spinner Richards failed to get any grip, and Ali Cook and Rob Key had a fairly easy time of adding 97 for no loss - helped by poor fielding and friendly umpires. Demeza broke through first thing in the morning, having Key caught by Hancock and four overs later having Joyce run out on the follow-through, but what followed was to define the match. Cook was joined by Owais Shah at the crease, and the two batted through four hours with little trouble other than excessive appealing. Both batsmen made their way into triple figures, the partnership was worth 225, and though the new ball in the hands of Kyle Wright and Trav Demeza yielded two wickets, the scoreboard read a grim 352 for 4.
Cook was eventually out slogging Richards down the throat of Demeza at deep mid on, nine short of a double century, but he had made his point - and it was rammed home by Alex Wharf. Dropped four times and deemed lbw by the TV camera thrice, he nevertheless managed to score 57 runs, well supported by Chris Read's 25. He took the total past 500, and to just make England A bat again looked a monumental task.
A spot of rain before lunch and solid strokemaking from Fitzsimmons and Smith gave the Webheads the hope of batting for a draw, but Wharf felt lucky after his batting effort, and when he was brought on as first change bowler from James Anderson, he sliced through the Webheads. They had lost Smith for 21 in the previous over, but Fuller had looked confident when he played Ali into the off side to get off the mark - but Wharf got uncanny bounce off the seam that caused him to edge behind on his third ball, which Read promptly dropped. Not having learned any lessons, Fuller attempted a drive on the next ball, which flew to Solanki at backward point - whose aerial catch was a crucial point. In the next over, Fitzsimmons gave a return catch to Wharf, and Blackman, Jellett and de Silva followed as his eight over spell yielded five men for 37. James Anderson cleaned up either side of tea, despite the belligerent last-wicket stand of 42 between Dave Richards and Kyle Wright, and the innings victory was assured.
