Wait for the exposé on your "other side" then...

"Patrick grasped the child's shirt tightly in his left hand as he forced his back against the wall. He calmly produced a pen-knife from his pocket and held the blade on the petrified boy's throat"

Moral of that story is, be nice and you get glowing praise in your articles, or else you'd better watch it. I'm starting to consider "novelist" as a career option.

I shudder to think that your imagination can come up with something that graphic so easily...

You'd be surprised what my imagination can do. I get the practice all summer trying to make County Championship reports sound interesting.

Andy Ferd - A Man on the up
Interviewed by Horse and Hound`s own Abhinav Shankar

AS: So Ferd, who is your Role Model and why do you look up to him/her?
Ferd: In cricket my role model is Don Bradman - He's the best batsman to ever play the game, he's down to earth and he knows almost everything that is important in cricket.

AS: What about in the CWXI system? Any players you look up to or who have taught you well?
Ferd: I admire most of the guys in the CWXI, but if I had to pick one, it’d probably be Blewy or Neil. Blewy, as captain of the CW XI, he's performed well, he's a great captain, really modest, as well as a great player.
Neil, well he's my captain at CW Black and he's led the team well this season. He's also the best spinner in the CWXI so I've learnt a lot from him in the nets.

AS: So you still rate Neil, apart from speculation he is only a sub-continental performer? What about up-and-coming leggie Tom Halsey?
Ferd: Halsey is a good bloke, but I haven't played much cricket with him, he's done well in the Development League and he will get up there into the International circuit with a bang.

AS: Your domestic career, you’d have to admit, hasn’t been spectacular, in fact far from it. After playing a handful of games for CW Green you were transferred to CW Black where you played just under 30 matches for little result. How do you see yourself as a player?
Ferd: Yeah, my domestic career has been pretty average and I've struggled to maintain a spot in the side. But I'm always improving and next season I hope I'll be able to get a spot at the top of the order, bringing my good form for New York over to the Blacks.

AS: Before New York however, you did have some shining moments. Your maiden 50 in FC cricket and that brilliant, quick-fire 91 in the OD competition made sure your name was noticed by State Selectors. Do you consider yourself a batsman then and what do you feel you did in those innings that was different?"
Ferd: *laughs* Well I’m certainly not a bowler! For me, the most important part of my innings is my concentration, when I can maintain my focus and score some runs. I find this a lot easier in the one day game, but I have been working on long periods of batting in the US and hopefully this will help. To improve my four-day batting, I’ve been trying long net sessions and for New York I have taken my time to score runs and this has helped me a lot, especially in the second half of the season.

AS: A "perfect" example of this is a recent OD game New York played against Texas where you scored 102 of 90 balls. You then followed this up with 3-25 including West Indian Dwayne Bravo with your part-time Off-spinners. Do you think this next Development League season will be a big showing of this form, with both bat AND bowl?
Ferd: Yeah, I certainly hope so. The game against Texas, I just felt really good that morning and only had the game in mind. But my bowling has been really good of late, I've found the pitches in the US turn a little more than in CWLand but generally my offies are improving. For next season, I think I'll do well with the bat and if my bowling continues this way, anything is possible.

AS: Finally, your thoughts on your Club - CW Black? The CW domestic competition is getting a much needed facelift, and the Blacks may not even exist as of next season. Do you wish to be based around the same group of players, or is it time for a fresh start, to kick off this new and improved Ferd?
Ferd: Yeah, the Blacks are a great bunch of people and I hope I'm with them next year, but you never know. If I'm in a new team maybe there will be less competition and more spots? I really don’t know! I guess the new Ferd would like to start where the old one left - at CW Black.

AS: Sorry, just a personal question, do you get many people mistaking you as Ralph from The Simpsons? It’s just… well, the resemblance is uncanny!
Ferd: I really must be off now, thankyou and good day.

AS: Wait a second, can you please just answer my question?
Ferd: Good day!!

SMITH RETIRES FROM CRICKET WEB CRICKET
by Kwase Knight

Accomplished opening batsman, Gibbs N. Smith has announced his retirement from the CW XI system with a somewhat indifferent attitude. Having been pursued by the CWBCC after failing to collect his payment for Season 7, Smith allegedly communicated a complete lack of regard for CW cricket whilst making his retirement official.

A veteran of 64 First Class matches and 65 List-A matches, Smith finishes with a healthy career record, having scored 4258 FC runs and 2283 OD runs. His 33 FC half-centuries and 3 FC hundreds sum up his career perfectly - talented, but careless. Playing for Cricket Web Red in Season 7, runs were difficult to come by and a clear lack of commitment was evident. It would only be a matter of time.

Smith represented the Cricket Web XI in one One Day International match, scoring 29 off 42 balls against New Zealand in Season 5.

Now the announcement has been made and Mr. Smith moves on to other things.

Sad to see 'Smithy' go. I'm sure it is the best decision for both player and the team. Interest was waining towards the end of the season. All the best in the future and success in whatever you decide to do.

A TITANIC EVENT - REFLECTING ON HISTORY
by Martin Tufnel

For the first time since Season 2/3, the CW XI met the CW 'A' in competitive cricket, as the series dubbed 'The Clash of the Titans' returned. The last time around there were 3 OD matches and 3 5D matches, and a 25-over game contested. As nostalgia would have it, we take a brief look back at that milestone series.

It was not only extremely competitive, but the result quite notable, as the second XI (CW XI Devs) won the 5D series 2-0 and the 25-over game.

And thus was born a tradition. A tradition discontinued for the next 4 seasons, but finally resurected in the Season 7/8 series, recently completed. The event has now been shortened to just 3 OD matches, but still featured a fine exhibition of cricketing talent and overall a very keen contest.

Having won the Season 7/8 contest 2-1, the second XI holds the deck when it comes to claiming of superiority in head-to-head matchups. Surely the rivalry shall continue for seasons to come. Indeed, one can only hope.
