Ireland stir, but CW XI get home
Cricket Web XI vs Ireland - 4-day
Scorecard
Ball by Ball
Cricket Web XI were caught napping on the opening day, as Dave Langford-Smith cut through the top order to set up an enthralling contest. Swinging the ball conventionally, the seamer removed Mørk, Young and Mamesh in a stunning opening burst, leaving the tourists on 39-3 early on. It would have been worse too, but Eion Morgan ranged to his right to floor a regulation chance off Rob Dauth, the first ball he had seen. Instead Dauth eased away with Andrew Cloete at the task of steadying the perverbial ship.
It was then against the run of play when he was out on the stroke of lunch, slashing uppishly to the waiting hands of Cusack in the covers. The score of 99-4 meant that Ireland were thoroughly the happier bunch heading in at the interval. That spirit and drive was further expressed in the opening moments of the second session. Boyd Rankin channeled the electricity of a surprisingly large audience and had two close shouts for lbw turned down, swinging the ball at lively pace under grey skies.
Cloete and Jasotharan proceeded from such uncertainty to dominate the remains of the day. The former opened his tour with 86, ultimately flicking Botha to Trent Johnston at midwicket. But for Jasotharan there were much greater things in store. Only he and Cloete crossed 25 in the innings, but Jasotharan marched on and imperiously staked his claim for a Test cap. His innings of 161 featured several chances, though the authority with which he struck the ball made catching an arduous task at the best of times. Eventually CW XI folded for 352 and Langford-Smith wrapped up with 6 for 65, career-best figures. For seven overs on the evening of day one Ireland were tested by pace and swing, and the CW bowlers relished the opportunity to bowl in such helpful conditions. At stumps the contest was intriguingly poised at 44-2.
The conditions continued to play a huge role on day three. Ireland crumbled for 176, largely attributed to an attractive 49 from Morgan. And much in the spirit of Australia, Neil Pickup chose not to enforce the follow-on with more than 60 overs remaining on the day. He later revealed the obvious, that the decision was intended to offer batting practice to his charges. That this backfired spectacularly proved a harsh point. Mamesh and Young fell again to the early diligence of Langford-Smith. From the early perils of 12-2, Cloeet again took centre stage. His 86 cost 94 balls and was perhaps the most crucial contribution of the CW XI second innings. Yet it was Jasotharan's stunning 22-ball stay that stole the show. For the second time in the game the wicketkeeper-batsman dominated the Irish attack, numbering 6 fours in 41 runs. Even as Langford-Smith completed his 10-wicket haul, the momentum seemed to have shifted decisively toward the visitors with such a counter-attack.
Rain pelted down for several hours throughout the third day to freshen up the pitch and stack the odds further in CW's favour. Still Ireland were brave in the chase of 385 and almost defied belief in reaching 224-2. Again Morgan was in supreme touch, following on from a stunning partnership of 155 between William Porterfield (94) and Andrew White (71). Much more than the first innings was required from the Webhead bowlers, faced with more stubborn batting, but still in seam-friendly conditions. For large periods they were dominated, at times embarrassingly exposed. But two quick blows by David Kennett set things back in order. First Kevin O'Brien nibbled at a rising delivery through to Jasotharan, who had taken over from Mørk with the gloves for the second innings. Then Kennett summoned the powers of reverse swing to remove Morgan's offstump, still 6 runs short of a deserved hundred.
From there, even with 76 runs needed and 5 wickets in hand, everything seemed a formality. Halsey was lucky to get Cusack adjudged caught behind, but Travis Demeza was clinical in removing three of the bottom five. Last out was Langford-Smith, bowled middlestump in the most comprehensive of fashions. Much work needs to be done by the Webheads before the first Test, starting on Thursday, whilst Ireland can take great heart from their performance against one of the fastest improving Test nations.
