Fourth One-day International: South Africa vs Sri Lanka
R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

Sri Lanka's brittle batting was exposed by the South African seamers, who successfully defended a target of 270 set after a mighty hundred from Graeme Smith. A particularly soft stroke from Mahela Jayawardene, gifting Johan Botha a wicket, has set Sri Lanka perilously close to elimination from their own tournament.

After Dambulla had brought success for the teams bowling first, Sri Lanka opted to do so, but were smashed about by a rampant Smith. The spinners were put on in early in an attempt to keep South Africa from scoring freely. However, Smith had brought up the hundred after 35 overs, though the side had still only managed 167 for three, leaving some hitting to do by the lower order. Smith left in the 40th over, caught after a drive dropped short of the boundary, but had made 116 runs and stamped his mark on the game.

This was done well enough, with Duminy and Boucher sharing a stand of 70, and though Thushara took a hat trick of catches, Boucher had managed to score at a rate slightly above nine an over before retreating.

Retreat summed up much of Sri Lanka's innings, too. After Udawatte and Jayasuriya had smashed Steyn for fourteen runs in the second over, the rate rapidly dropped before Udawatte dragged on Morkel for 19. Kleinveldt, who had come in for Albie Morkel, sneaked another through the defences of Sangakkara, and with nearly 30 overs remaining Sri Lanka required six an over. With Jayasuriya shackled by responsibility - he was dropped twice and lbw twice before finally being caught behind for 49 - and the others short of ability, the South African bowlers feasted as they limited Sri Lanka to 178 and stole the bonus point.

South Africa 270 for seven (50)
Smith 116, Duminy 43*, Boucher 42, de Villiers 38; Thushara 3/50, Muralitharan 2/48

Sri Lanka 178 all out (48)
Jayasuriya 49; Morkel 3/31 (9), Steyn 3/38 (9), Ntini 2/22

South Africa won by 92 runs
Man of the Match: G. C. Smith (South Africa)

Table: Cricket Web XI 8pts, South Africa 7pts, Sri Lanka 5pts.

Fifth One-day International: Cricket Web XI vs Sri Lanka
at R. Premadasa Stadium

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

Despite a fine effort from Neil Pickup, the wheels fell off towards the end, and Sri Lanka smashed their way to a dramatic victory to keep the triangular series alive. Cricket Web XI should still qualify unless they avoid a drubbing at the hands of South Africa, but some glaring holes were exposed during the match.

James Stedman failed to back up the faith that was shown when Cricket Web XI chose to bat, continuing the horror show of a series by padding up to Chaminda Vaas for a duck. Nick Scott took over the opening role well enough by hitting a four off Kulasekara, and the rate kept solidly up throughout the powerplays.

However, Maharoof brought in some extra pace after the second powerplay was deferred, and struck in the eighteenth over despite having both Chaulk and Scott dropped off identical deliveries. In the next over, Cloete feebly dragged one to Kandamby for the second duck of the innings, and the Webheads never got going from there. Despite Kulasekara gifting forty runs - including five wides - to the batsmen, they struggled to get rid of their shackles before the fortieth over, in which Chaulk and Butler smashed eighteen runs. Four wickets then fell in the next eleven balls, and Cricket Web XI hobbled to 220 for eight.

Gough and Smith were largely disappointing with the new ball, though also somewhat unlucky - Udawatte missed a number of deliveries, and looked decidedly uncertain during his innings of 46. It lasted for 27 overs, however, in a stand of 98 with Jayasuriya, which had gone slowly but not slowly enough to threaten the Sri Lankan chase. All it needed was some impetus; however, it was the Webheads who had reason to cheer first, as Pickup snared Sangakkara and Jayawardene in single digits. With Tuesday's collapse fresh in the memory, the Sri Lankan crowd looked dejected.

However, Cricket Web failed to apply the pressure. Kapugedera, Kandamby and Maharoof gradually got the game under control, and with thirty deliveries to go only 36 runs were required. Kapugedera then smashed five fours to reach 57 at a silly rate, and Maharoof secured the win in the next over, leaving Sri Lanka with a faint hope of reaching the home final.

Cricket Web XI 220 for eight (50)
Chaulk 84, Scott 42, Butler 38; Mendis 3/55, Muralitharan 2/42, Maharoof 2/48

Sri Lanka 221 for six (47.2)
Kapugedera 57, Jayasuriya 48, Udawatte 46; Pickup 3/32

Sri Lanka won by four wickets
Man of the Match: C. Kapugedera (Sri Lanka)

Table: Cricket Web XI 9pts, Sri Lanka 9pts, South Africa 7pts.

Oh dear, went backwards instead of improving. Good to see Chaulk & Scott make some runs up the top of the order though, and a fine effort from Pickup with the ball.

Good to finally make some runs, but a very disappointing loss for the guys. Bowlers did as well as they could with not much to work with, unfortunately.

Gutted to be dropped, but it seems I'm rather dispensible. Good win, boys.
I'd say it's a rotational policy more than being dropped actually. Could be wrong though.
Was to do with balance in batting and bowling for what it worth.

Though we need the opening bowlers to strike more consistently to make it work. One bad game doesn't mean much though especially against Jayasuriya and co.

Unlucky boys. I'm going to have to improve my drinks dispensing efficiency to help us get up:p

Sixth One-day International: Cricket Web XI vs South Africa
at R. Premadasa Stadium

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

Kingsley Clapham and Neil Pickup feasted as Cricket Web XI put out a dominant bowling performance to humble the South Africans and set up the final showdown most neutrals in Sri Lanka would have preferred. Cricket Web XI had earlier put up another rather shoddy batting performance, but with the bowlers on song, it hardly mattered.

After being inserted, Nick Scott - replacing James Stedman at the top after the latter's lack of runs in recent times - entertained a meagre crowd with a moderate 17, Cloete and Chaulk set the match back alight, though the runs were not flowing in the manner they usually do for Black. A dead outfield contributed, along with electric South Africa fielding, and by the end of the twenty powerplay overs Cricket Web stood at a sedate 91 for one.

Cloete was caught at the wicket shortly afterwards, and the enigma Chris Butler replaced him. Heavily out of form on tour, he began his innings by coolly reverse sweeping Johan Botha - hardly a dangerous proposition - for four with the third ball, and glued the innings together after Chaulk committed hara-kiri on 62. Morne Morkel continued to bowl with decent pace and became a heady proposition, scrambling together three for 39 including the debutant Read, who was bowled for four. However, Crampton and Butler managed to strike the boundary seven times in the final three overs, and boosted the Webhead total to 229 for five.

This South Africa needed to chase in 40 overs to keep Cricket Web XI out of the final. Judging by their batting, it seems they aimed to, only failed miserably. Gibbs had been dropped for Amla in this game, and Amla quickly got to bat, as de Villiers failed to keep out a snorter from Gough - yorked for a three-ball duck. Graeme Smith then nicked his namesake to first slip for two, and South Africa had lost their first two wickets for five runs.

Patient rebuilding was required - so Kallis decided to keep his partner on his toes. Calling for a bizarre run in the fifth over, Amla sprinted to make it safe at the non-strikers' end, but to no avail as Kallis was a good two feet short after third umpire consultation. Duminy looked to have seen off the new ball threat, however, and after eleven overs the match looked to settle into a more normal 50-over pattern.

Smith thought otherwise. Pulling out a stunning catch off Clapham to dismiss Amla, he reignited the Webhead effort, while the South Africans quickly ran out of recognised batsmen. Rory Kleinveldt smashed a slog to Read at second slip, Duminy smashed Clapham about a bit before being caught by Scott at long on, and Morne Morkel was lbw - Clapham suddenly had four for 20, and South Africa were 73 for seven. Going for the kill, Pickup put four slips in to his own bowling - then held a return catch off Boucher. Cloete dropped Ntini next ball, but it was of little consequence, as Crampton stumped him in Pickup's next over, and Steyn finished off with another catch to an obliging Chaulk. South Africa had been thoroughly routed for 91 - nothing is wrong with the bowling, but the batsmen need to learn how to up the tempo.

Cricket Web XI 229 for five (50)
Butler 66*, Chaulk 62; Morkel 3/39

South Africa 91 all out (24.2)
Duminy 26; Clapham 4/27 (8), Pickup 3/11 (2.2)

Cricket Web XI won by 138 runs
Man of the Match: K. R. Clapham (Cricket Web XI)

Final table: Cricket Web XI 14pts, Sri Lanka 9pts, South Africa 7pts

Series Stats. Note ridiculously low strike rates on Sri Lankan wickets.
