1st "Test": South Africa A vs Cricket Web A
at The Wanderers

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

An enthralling four-day clash at the Wanderers ended in a triumph for the tourists, after one of the finest spells of spin bowling seen in the country since the days of Hugh Tayfield. Dave Richards took eight wickets cheaply, and with the help of Nick Borcich, the South Africans were kept in check as they chased a large target set by a scintillating Jasotharan.

Smith won the toss and chose to bat first, but the first day was marred by scrappy cricket. Gerard Armstrong got the highest score by far, but was given help by fielders and umpires; meanwhile the slip fielders had a busy day, with both Justin Kemp and JP Duminy holding catches off the openers. Swift scoring from Jasotharan and Arnold meant the total stood at 125 for three at lunch, but Morne Morkel stuck to his quick bowling and was rewarded with two wickets after being brought on for Steyn. If Dippenaar hadn't floored Richards and Armstrong in quick succession, the Webheads could have been all out for 200; instead, Armstrong hoiked Morkel for six to move into the eighties, and Richards drove Langeveldt for a couple of boundaries.

Richards perished after tea, having given adequate support throughout the 57-run eighth-wicket stand, and Nick Borcich copied him with a fine unbeaten 31. Morkel cleaned up, thus celebrating an expensive five-for, after Friedel de Wet held a simple top edge in the outfield.

The new ball was wasted against Elgar and Bodi, with leg-byes and a couple of fours helping them to 43 in the first ten overs from the new-ball bowlers, and it took in-form Nick Borcich six overs to produce a wicket-taking ball, which squared up Goolam Bodi. Cunningham then struck to remove Dippenaar before stumps, an expansive stroke finding its way onto the pads and leg stump, before Elgar slugged Borcich to midwicket for six to end the day at 107 for two.

The second day began confidently for the former youth captain Elgar, who looked in total control of Cunningham, and Smith brought in his spinner Dav Richards. Predictably, the result was mayhem. Elgar edged for four the first ball he faced, then had one flighted and promptly smacked full to Borcich. McKenzie gave a return catch before Thomas smacked a yorker into van Wyk's middle stump, and at 153 for five things looked excellent for the Webheads.

Poor fielding, a belligerent Duminy, and stolid tail-enders turned the tables, however, despite Richards working out de Wet and Steyn. He had to take a rest, however, and Charl Langeveldt surprised the local crowd as he kept out 55 balls, allowing for the innings' second-highest partnership while Duminy reached the hundred just before tea.

Trailing by 13, the Webheads got off to a rotten start against Steyn's new ball. The Phalaborwa man swung the ball both ways and created more trouble for his slip cordon, who held the catches offered off Armstrong (this time held early on) and Arnold (who cut a straight one to the hands of McKenzie). Morne Morkel at square leg failed to hold Jasotharan fourth ball, however, which turned out to be crucial. The wicket-keeper essentially took the game away from the hosts, slashing at every single ball, and by stumps he had reached 98 off 69 deliveries, while Steyn had pegged back another of his batting partners by bowling Garven. Kearsley, meanwhile, had thrown away another start by a catch to Kemp at point.

Naturally, the dazzling fireworks had to end sooner or later, and with Dippenaar holding a catch off Jasotharan's 88th ball, but once again the tail provided useful runs. Adam Collins surprised the crowd with three fine fours, while Richards continued a good tour with the bat as he smacked five fours and a six on his way to 36. With a partnership of 37 for the ninth wicket, the Webheads suddenly had a lot more to play with between the clouds of Johannesburg.

This time, Nick Borcich was promoted to new-ball duties, and did not disappoint. While Thomas got carned by Elgar, Borcich had two men caught in the deep, but also suffered from the blade of Elgar. By tea, he had reached 36, and the youngster seemed to hold the key to a South African victory.

Richards, however, came to the rescue. After a one-hour break due to rain, Richards put a full ball up to Elgar, who wanted to drive it for four to bring up the fifty. Instead, Smith at mid off came between, and after more rain it became clear that the bowlers were in total control. 31 runs came off the day's final thirteen overs, while both captain Neil McKenzie and wicket-keeper van Wyk had perished to the day's grand bowlers, Borcich and Richards.

On the final morning, South Africa required the final five to bat more than the top five, with Duminy in and settled. Duminy and Kemp chose the attacking route, taking 36 off the first six overs, but Collins came in to steady the ship and found seam movement, and Duminy, lashing out, instead found himself bowled. With Kemp perishing lbw shortly afterwards, it only remained to clean up the tail, which Richards did in expert fashion using the time-honoured squeeze method.

I'm rather pleased with making the 'A' side in my debut season, and i see I haven't done too bad with the bat, one ton and a couple of fiftys. Good Work Guys!

Disappointing result in the last warm-up, but the win in the first test more than makes up for it.

Had quite sporadic internet access just lately, hence the inactivity. Should be cleared up in around a week.
