That they are for sure.

Not only is it a beautiful tale to take Root, Williamson and Bairstow in a hat-trick. But to do it on day 1 of a first class game between Lancashire and Yorkshire as a right arm medium pacer with a mid-30s average with the ball is about as romantic a tale as it can get for a first class cricketer. He will be telling the story until his dying days. I think it makes it even better that he is an all-rounder that's better with the bat, it makes it an even greater individual moment and one to savour.

He also took a 5-for for the first time in his career aged 27, with only 40 first class games under his belt. I can also say right now that averaging 30 with the bat and 36 with the ball shows he is a decent all-round cricket for first class level. He is no career mug, anyone should be proud of those pre-game stats. He also effected a run out and got his 5-for with a clean bowled dismissal.

It's a real shame to see Lancs crumble so badly in reply and not back Clark's bowling (plus run out) effort up. Apart from the openers only one player making it past 10 (Clark himself) is criminal from Lancs. Clark will be in bed tonight and wonder how on earth Lancs aren't ahead in the game. And yet they trail by 83 runs. One of the strangest days of first class cricket you are likely to see..

I think he's seen enough of us this season to know

Personally hating that Clark is becoming our best player. He was the type of absolute minimum standard cricketer that should only appear once a season, preferably against the MCCU's. Fair play for him to step up his game massively this year with both bat and ball (he started as a keeper with us who bowled for fun in 2020, and somehow it stuck), but its a damning indictment of our performance that he's a regular, let alone best player. It's Luke Proctor all over again.

Has Hameed really been out four innings in a row while offering no shot?
He's been out for about 4 months without offering a shot.

Calling it now, Hameed is going to go down in the "Wonder what ever happened to him? list of Test players. The last person to completely fall off a cliff like this post Test debut would probably be Beau Casson, but he didn't arrive with anywhere near the same hype when he first started.

Good day for the leaders at Nottingham yesterday. :)

Less happy to see Broad's contribution with the first test a week and a half away.

Doing a Billy Godleman by the looks of it. Shame as he looked the part in India.

Was at Cheltenham yesterday. Seemed to be quite a few Durham fans around. There was a family of Durham fans near where I was sitting. Dad had to take his son home because it was too hot. Northern softies.

Stokes bowled well. Wood was walking around like a cripple even before the start of play. Will be retired by 30 or 31 imo. Poor bloke.

All over at Nottingham, with Surrey once again winning by an innings and plenty. I don't know if we have any Notts supporters on CW, but the locals can't have been impressed; in 2nd place plus home advantage shouldn't result in this kind of hammering.

Morkel's been an inspired signing. A high class performer who's decided he's a bit too old to be playing test matches is therefore available for the season and still far too good for most sides.

I suppose praying for rain is pointless, even in Manchester :(
What with all the moorland fires that we've had, basically all summer we've been praying for rain and getting nowt. Looking out the window its about to chuck it down in the next 15 mins. God is a Frenchman.
