I wasn't aware this North v South thingy was on, and that apparently Radio 5 Extra were covering it! Apparently the Northerners got a pasting.

Embarrassing not to take a wicket. Best in the country, how does Coughlin get in there 4 wickets at 104.00, batting 8.66?

Bell-Drummond flopping in the West Indian 50 over. Hasn't done great in lions overseas cricket. Playing in div 2 I really think if you want to be playing international cricket you need to be standing out when you have the opportunity to play in other comps. DBD seems a fair way short of the standard required to play international cricket at present. They normally do 2 or 3 years in the lions then England leave them to their own devices to see if they can improve further (if they haven't reached international level)..
Bell-Drummond just isn't a great lo player, still top scored in 2 of the 4 lions games he played recently and didn't do bad today against the north. In that same time Jennings hasn't done nothing in those games but got a Test century against India....

Coughlin has not really pushed on for Durham. He looked promising for the 2nd XIs and was expected to fill that allrounder role, Stokes being unavailable and Collingwood over-the-hill, but if anything he has gone backward since getting into the first team.

I thought they were picking proven players. Also in the North, Mahmood 8 wickets at 45.12.

I didn't pick them!

Durham are in transition. There are number of players - Burnham, Carse, etc. - who have just reached the first team or are skirting around the fringes of the first team but are probably, realistically, two years from the finished article; Durham have been forced to use them because the squad is threadbare through age and Surrey nicking our players. Coughlin heads the pack. He has probably been in the team long enough now really to see something Stokey there but Stokes do not grow on trees I suppose?

Yea Coughlin has done sweet FA in List A games.

North's team is much more speculative and inexperienced (aside from Bresnan)

Got to say South look like a better team there with a good new ball attack. Will have to be on the shady tonight.

Considering we are scratching around for English pace bowlers - Wood being a bit of a knackered job and Steven Finn being, well, Steven Finn - I'm surprised Jamie Overton has not been talked of more. Bowls at express pace (93mph). His average is a bit **** mind.

I think TRJ or Rushworth could do a decent job in test cricket in England. Rushworth's a good bowler. Didn't have a great 2016 - think he was suffering some burnout from playing nearly every game for Durham for the last few years.

However I don't think you'd want TRJ/Rushworth as the third seamer in a team with Broad and Anderson. Really need some younger legs and more pace for that spot to compliment Broad and Anderson.

Rushworth was over-bowled, across all three formats, and had niggles. In contrast Onions just played the championship and took 55 wickets which is rather good for him at this stage. That is how you should play Rushworth also but the squad is stretched.

PS

Rushworth had a most improbable injury last season which kept him out of a game or two: a muscle strain in the behind!

No Wood! Should we be worried?

TMS in their infinite wisdom broadcasted the first match but are not broadcasting this second one so we only have the scoreboards!

Perhaps playing his home matches at Taunton has something to do with that.
But I don't know how he goes elsewhere. tbh he's never struck he as amounting to very much.

Really happy for these two scoring runs (northeast, dawson).

Northeast has scored a load over the last couple of years over all formats so nice he's getting some recognition.

Dawson has been excellent with the bat in white ball cricket for a couple of years. Serious candidate to replace Moeen at 7 in the ODI team. Is more accumulator than basher but England could do with a reliable guy at 7. Dawson certainly more like to get a risk free 50 or hold an end up with one of the other bats when in trouble than Moeen these days - and probably isn't any worse a slogger. Bowling Moeen edges it (even with his terrible record in recent times) and Dawson needs to keep working on it. Dawson the much better fielder. Rashid been in the team works against Dawson as it's nice to have spinners that turn the ball in opposite directions. Hope Dawson gets a run after the champions trophy if Moeen keeps failing.
