A very big well done to England - certainly they produced something of a turn-up and delivered some happiness for their long-suffering fans on this tour. Tournament cricket is all about producing your best when it counts, and in the last few games they certainly put in performances a class above the Aussies.
With Pietersen to come back into the team, presumably for Strauss, they can go to the World Cup confident that they can pose a threat. Certainly some of the pieces of their jigsaw puzzle would seem to have been resolved in the second half of this tournament, particularly with Plunkett now a must to play in the Caribbean and Paneser growing in assurance as the ODI spinner of choice. The return to form of Collingwood and Flintoff must also provide a great deal of heart to English fans.
For Australia its a good opportunity to go away and have a good think about what they need to fix up before the World Cup. Certainly its not time for panic stations, but the degree to which they have relied upon Ponting to play match winning innings is something of a concern. Both Clarke and Hussey appear to be out of form at the moment, and all Oz fans should be on their knees praying for Symonds to heal up much quicker than is expected. Again, there are some positives we can take out of this - the fast bowling situation has become clearer, with Johnson now clearly the preferred 4th quick and Tait and Clark confirmed as capable replacements. Hayden has had something of a return to form - hopefully it will be good enough to carry him through the Cup. And Ponting has continued as clearly the best ODI batsman in the world at the moment. The big question is the allrounder slot. I think Watson has shown enough to merit his spot, particularly as White didn't push his case as much as he could have. Watson should bat higher than seven, and if Symonds doesn't come up, I'd be tempted to slot Watson in at 5, ahead of Hodge and Hussey. Really, Clarke should be below Watson and Hodge as he seems to thrive in the finisher role whereas they produce their best up the order. The other advantage of Watson is he provides scope for the 4 seamers to be complemented by Hogg, rather than Clarke/White. Haddin MUST go to the Cup as well - hope he dominates in the Chappell-Hadlee...
This has certainly spiced things up a bit in the run-up to the WC...
Happy for all the English fans here on CW who've bourne the disappointments of this tour with good grace by and large. To all the Kiwi fans indulging in vicarious gloating... see you next week lads!
