A very good team performances, all the bowlers bar Pickup bowled well and took a couple wickets. Goff and Cloete got us off to brillant start in the chase and then the middle order finished off the job.

Good win there fellaz.

Still not a bad effort from Ganguly, he is surely having a gun season so far.

Ugh. Having a horrible Trophy personally - but we're still in contention, and beating the Sri Lankans will put us in the Semi Finals. Time to step up...

After rain across India delayed the tournament by one day, the hosts failed to take advantage of a good bowling performance from Munaf Patel and Ajit Agarkar, as the move to include more batting partially failed - Ramesh Powar bowled poorly and was taken apart by Hayden and Hussey, but batted usefully as the top order collapsed to Bracken and Tait.

Australia won the toss and chose to bat, and were immediately in trouble, with Gilchrist smashing to Powar, out for two. Ponting and Hayden rebuilt well, taking runs off Zaheer when he replaced Munaf, but Agarkar's double-strike of Ponting and Hodge led the home crowd to believe a crash was possible. However, once the spin was introduced, Clarke and Hayden played it to perfection. It took 58 balls to reach the half-century - once there, Hayden took on all the bowlers, hitting a total of thirteen boundaries in a splendid knock of 140 not out.

A key factor in Hayden's free play was the amount of support he got from Hussey. He entered at the end of the 23rd over, with plenty of work still to be done, and rotated the strike exceptionally well. Seamless cooperation against India's various fourth and fifth bowling options gave plenty of runs, and Australia kept the run rate above 5 for the entire innings, thus ending their innings with a comfortable 294 for four - after Hayden and Hussey had added 189.

Then Bracken and Tait steamed in to ruin the party. Putting the ball on a length, they found plenty of movement, nurdling out Sehwag and Ganguly to catches in the outfield. Rahul Dravid entered at two for one - and left at 16 for three, caught by Hogg after an outside edge went to point.

The rest of the match was a formality. Australia bowled in the right places, never letting Tendulkar and Yuvraj rebuild - they did add 102, but the run rate grew exponentially, before Tait and Symonds ran through the team. Zaheer and Munaf slogged a bit at the end, adding 50 for the final wicket, but Australia still won comfortably and reaffirmed their position as favourites.

Australia 294 for four (50 overs)
ML Hayden 140*, MEK Hussey 70*
AB Agarkar 2/44, MM Patel 2/56

India 257 for nine (50 overs)
Yuvraj Singh 78, SR Tendulkar 53
SW Tait 3/51, NW Bracken 2/41, A Symonds 2/67

Australia won by 37 runs

South Africa v West Indies
at Wankhede Stadium

Scorecard
Ball by Ball

South Africa slammed the West Indies to salvage some pride as they are due to exit the Champions Trophy bottom of Pool D. An explosive batting performance posed 313 for 9 batting first, and though West Indies were spirited in their response, they could manage only 270 for 6.

Only Jacques Kallis and Justin Kemp scored half centuries - 56 and 54 respectively - but every South African batsman contributed in some form in the large total. Spinners Chris Gayle and Dave Mohammed shared 6 wickets, while Ramnaresh Sarwan also took 1. The seamers struggled, however, conceding a combined 186 runs from 30 overs for the price of 2 wickets. Extras accounted for 27 runs in the innings, and 15 wides played a healthy part in the large score.

In attacking the total, the West Indies struggled early on to 44-3. Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan scored a positive 37 from 36 balls, but he and Shivnarine Chanderpaul fell in quick succession. Dwayne Smith joined Marlon Samuels at the crease at 112-5, and the two added 146 for the sixth wicket. Stunningly Dwayne Smith batted well in scoring 84 from 82 balls. The demand of the run rate was far too great, however. Samuels ended unbeaten on 92, but Shaun Pollock's 4-51 played a big role in holding things in South Africa's favour.

South Africa 313-9 (50 overs)
JM Kemp 54 [46], JH Kallis 56 [71], GC Smith 43 [52]
D Mohammed 3-41 [10], CH Gayle 3-61 [8]

West Indies 270-6 (50 overs)
MN Samuels 92* [122], DR Smith 84 [82], RR Sarwan 37 [36]
SM Pollock 4-51 [10], JM Kemp 2-44 [7]

South Africa won by 43 runs.

Ian Markus, Liam Camps and Andrew Cloete batted Sri Lanka out of the Champions Trophy, providing immense scores at a solid rate to set the Lankans the nigh-on impossible task of chasing 276 in 33 overs to qualify. Cricket Web XI, meanwhile, could afford losing, so long as they only did it in 46 overs. With those numbers in mind, Sri Lanka began their charge onto Gough and Watt; however, the spinners stood up for the first time in the tournament, and prevented a fairytale win for Sri Lanka. However, a too defensive approach once Sri Lanka had been denied qualification nearly cost Cricket Web their place in the semi-finals.

The pitch played exceptionally well, and there was little in it for anyone. Markus and Cloete weren't particularly quick out of the blocks, but charged onto change bowlers Maharoof and Jayasuriya, with Markus the dominant partner. By the 20th over, he had reached 70, and Jayawardene dared not hold Muralitharan back any longer.

He would have had success in his first over, as Cloete launched him to Tharanga, but Tharanga put down the simplest of catches and Cloete lived on. However, three overs later he top-edged a Malinga yorker, and Dilshan rushed in well to take the skier. Goff followed shortly afterwards, lbw to a Muralitharan off break, and it was time to join Markus and Camps once more.

The classic partnership provided 76 runs this time, as Camps found time to score more freely in another new role at four. The runs dried up for Markus, who cruelly denied himself a hundred through a massive slog to Maharoof, but the new batsman Dauth was more adapt at keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Camps launched into more attacks, eventually run out for 79 with ten fours and a six, and Butler, Crampton and Halsey added a few runs at the end to make the tally 275.

Sri Lanka's chase was dramatic. After an early appeal for lbw against Jayasuriya was turned down, they were 17 for nought after four overs, but then began to seek the boundary. Tharanga and Jayasuriya hit six fours in three overs, before Jayasuriya was lbw to a textbook quick delivery from Watt.

That brought in a particularly belligerent captain, Mahela Jayawardene. After his first two deliveries were taken for singles, he sliced Gough for a six and a three, showing the Sri Lankans had full intent of scoring at the required rate of eight an over. A little later, Tharanga blasted 13 off an over from Watt, who was taken out of the attack despite Tharanga leaving lbw to Camps in the next over. Camps was in turn smashed by Sangakkara, who hit 13 off four balls before dragging Halsey on.

Halsey was the pick of the bowlers. In the eighteenth over he had Jayawardene dropped twice - if any of those had been held it might have precipitated a collapse, but the Lankans went on with their charge at a little under seven an over. However, it wasn't enough, and when Gough had Dilshan bowled on return, they were at 158 for six, needing 116 off 40 balls to qualify.

The 33-over mark passed with Sri Lanka still requiring 75 for victory. It now remained to see whether the Lankans could provide the hosts with the result they needed for an Indian semi-final appearance. Jayawardene, at least, seemed determined, smashing boundaries seemingly at will, and reached his hundred after just 85 balls. Though the field was back to prevent boundaries, Jayawardene found gaps regardless of where Goff placed his fielders, while Muralitharan rotated the strike excellently.

Watt, however, broke the magic. Returning with figures of 6-0-47-1, he charged in and bowled six balls with pace outside off, getting an edge off Muralitharan's bat with one of them to register a wicket maiden. Sri Lanka still needed only 19 off 24 to eliminate Cricket Web - but Goff ended Jayawardene's charge with a running catch, taking his opposing number out for 104.

Cricket Web XI 275 for six (50 overs)
I Markus 99, LA Camps 79
M Muralitharan 2/37

Sri Lanka 256 all out (42.3 overs)
DPMDS Jayawardene 104
TC Halsey 3/50, KJ Gough 2/62, DJ Watt 2/47 [7], NS Pickup 2/52 [8.3]

Fantastic Victory fella's :D

Great batting from Markus & Camps, and some decent bowling to keep them under the target despite the Lankans attempt to blast you out of the park.

Happy enough with that. Shame to see a lot of our seamers getting hit for so many runs, but with wickets falling at a decent rate it wasn't a big problem.

New Zealand v Pakistan
at Wankhede Stadium

Scorecard
Ball by Ball

New Zealand surged past Pakistan and into the semifinals on the back of some hearty late hitting by captain Daniel Vettori and clinical death bowling by Shane Bond. A total of 248-8 was good enough for New Zealand to hold off Pakistan in victory by 14 runs. Pakistan recovered well from early strife, but could post only 234 for 9 in their 50 overs.

Peter Fulton was solid with 54 at the top of New Zealand's innings, even as Stephen Fleming and Ross Taylor fell in the first hour of play. Scott Styris threatened in the middle order with 34, but was victim to Shahid Afridi attempting to clear long-off in the 35th over. A brisk innings of 28 by Jacob Oram went a fair way to gathering momentum for New Zealand, but it was Chris Harris' 46 from 51 balls that did the most damage.

At the end of the innings Vettori broke loose with a 7-ball cameo of 19 runs, hitting a six and a four off Mohammad Asif, then another six off Umar Gul. Asif finished with 3-50 though, the best of the bowlers.

Unlike his opposite number, Shoaib Malik failed to make a significant impact, instead pushing softly back to James Franklin for 9. Yasir Hameed took over and paced his innings of 79 carefully. In his stead, Imran Nazir skied a pull shot to be caught by the bowler Bond, and Mohammad Yousuf was caught at cover off Oram for 14. From 56-3, Hameed and Salman carried the score to 138 at the fall of the latter. Craig McMillan landed a sharp offbreak to trap Salman lbw for 42, amidst a surprisingly effective spell by the medium pacer - 1-33 from 10.

With the required run rate approaching 7, Abdur Razzaq was forced to look for shots from the start of his innings. Bond returned to the attack and Razzaq stuck to his task admirably is dispatching the fast bowler for a six then a four in a 12-run over. But McMillan continued to pester with his slow stuff, and Oram returned with a tidier second spell, then bowled Razzaq for 20.

Bond dropped Afridi amidst a hectic 12-ball period that saw him and Hameed gather 22 runs, but Harris had the last say in enticing a leading edge that settled into his hands for a return catch. Hameed walked away with the highest score of the game, carrying his team's hopes with him. Afridi couldn't produce the spectacular as he has done on occasion in the past, and he was out pulling at the penultimate ball of the match.

New Zealand finish on top of Pool D and will therefore face the Cricket Web XI in the Champions Trophy semifinal. Australia will meet West Indies in their playoff, looking to remain unbeaten en route to the final.

New Zealand 248-8 (50 overs)
