The 2019 WC seems to have been a real turning point in Carey’s batting in OD and FC formats

Stats based on just 1 or 2 matches/innings are irrelevant.
As a general rule, I absolutely agree

Rate both Carey and Inglis myself. But saying one is clearly a better option than the other at this stage is premature imo. The way I view it, it is a good thing to have some competition for the wicketkeeping role when Paine is retired or retrenched

Correct; the Carey numbers are borderline meaningless given that the two had basically identical 2017-18s. Only meaningful area of comparison is that Carey made roughly the same number of runs as Inglis in half the games in 2019-20, and I wouldn't read too much significance into that anyway - it's pretty flimsy evidence.

But 33 Inglis innings for 700-odd runs at 23 in the two seasons before this one isn't screaming 'standout' to me. I like him, I rate him, I hope he's turned a corner and is properly good now - rather than talented and promising. But a couple of tons at Gladys Elphick Park (and the like) isn't enough to declare him heir apparent and support a view that picking Carey is clearly wrong imo.
