Would say that in Test matches Rash goes to his wrong'un to often and doesn't set batsmen up enough for it.
I cant remember who said it but I heard a commentator say its not good balls that will get wickets but good spells in Test's. As Dan said in T20 batsman need to score runs quickly so they are bound to make more mistakes, that's why I wonder if these guys are not tactically astute to set up batsman in the longer form as you say. Maybe T20 has made spinners think all they have to do is bowl a couple of different variations every over instead of making plans for different batsman.

Yeah, AWTA. At this stage I don't think there's quite the scope for guys like Rashid to learn how to bowl Test match leg spin in the Championship. Rashid's been quite well handled in that he tends to get quite a few overs -- and he's learned his trade well. But I don't think he's ever been consistently faced with guys he needs to make plans against. In County Cricket, I think that being skilled in the mechanics of leg spin is more than enough to get you wickets -- CC batsmen aren't especially great against quality spin, and have rarely been faced with it. Drift, turn and a good wrong'un can make you prolific without having to think about how you're getting guys out. See also: Imran Tahir's success. Good wrong'un that turns.

Step up to Test level and, on all bar the dustiest of decks, you have to out-think batsmen rather than flicking five leggies and a wrong'un down each over and waiting for them to miss one on the stumps or nick it behind. And this is where a lot of international spinners have had to learn on the job in recent years -- the planning side of things.

I think Rashid has most of the mechanics sorted (I do think he needs to bowl a fraction quicker through the air, though. Very loopy in ODIs, in particular). But those mechanics only get you so far (especially vs. Pakistan in the UAE); he has to develop the planning/mental side of his game to become a genuinely good Test option. I reckon he can do it, too.

T20 hasn't ruined Rashid. I think we're underestimating how big a step up it is from FC cricket to Test cricket -- especially when you're playing the former in England and the latter in the UAE.

Yeah, and last 3 years Rashid has essentially been a batting all rounder for Yorkies. They normally have 4 (very good) seam options and him, and in England you don't need a prize for guessing who is going to get most of the bowling.

Doubt he has bowled many long spells in CC. He bowled 212.2 overs in 7 matches last year, which is 30 a game. Not really what a spin bowler needs to develop. Warne averaged 47 per test match for comparison (obviously making no comparison between players just at how often they bowl).

Oh yeah i'm not saying he will never make it, I hope he can make the transition as he has the ability its all down to him now. He's still young for a spinner (about 27?) but will find it hard to replace Ali so will have to make do with being no.2 and the odd away series where we'll play 2 spinners.

Btw Dan you had a shocker this round what happened? I have just sneaked ahead of you ;)

I find it laughable that some people are still unsure about Lynn when Arun ****ing Finch has had success at international level in short formats

Not sure how anyone can be unsure about Lynn as a iT20 player (i'd be shocked he if he doesn't end up a gun ODi player as well).
