*Official* Bangladesh in New Zealand

I am pretty sure people on here know how good Franklin is, but it is more a case of them being unsatisfied that his role in the ODI side fits in with the teams best interests. Sure he is a quality allrounder, but he is like at best our eighth best bat and fifth best seamer - and he doesn't have a defined role in either department with regards to the ODI side.
Can you honestly say that you do not find it hard to see how he fits into the ODI side?
I think his position is pretty clearly defined as being similar to that of Oram a few years ago. Can bowl a few overs and can bat either a long saving innings or bash a few over the rope. If he actually takes that role by his teeth is another question entirely.

Martin Crowe seems to think Peter Ingram will play against Bangladesh in the one of test. Since he's "in" with this New Zealand team I guess we'll have to assume he's right. I wonder what will happen with the batting order, guessing Guptill will drop out and Watling will move down to three.

Well based on the fact he wasn't picked for the limited over games It wouldn't surprise me if Watling wasn't picked for the test either.

i reckon Watling should be picked ahead of Guptil cos he played excellent in the second innings on his debut against Pakistan, where guptil was dissapointing in the first innings =]

McIntosh
Ingram
Watling/Guptill
Taylor
Broom
Vettori
McCullum
Tuffey
Southee
??????
Martin

Possibly Franklin in there I suppose, maybe McKay/Arnel or someone. Not a fan of Tuffey at 8 despite his heroics, not when we have Martin at 11 anyway.
With the top order it looks like whoever performs keeps their spot, with Watling possibly covering the opening role too. If I recall correctly Cumming was in the mix up recently too. So our top 3 looks like:
McIntosh, Watling, Guptill, Ingram, Flynn (N), Cumming, Sinclair (N)

Franklin has to show some bowling form to be considered for the Test, where he WILL be required to bowl overs. Well, maybe not, since its Bangladesh, but we have to treat the test like any other.

I think it would be grossly unfair to drop Watling. And I am not keen on dropping Guptill, since he is one of most talented batsmen in New Zealand. But every time he fails in a test match, he disappoints me.

Depends really. I'd have any of Guptill, Ingram or Watling ahead of Flynn or Fulton. But Broom will be taking the five spot presumably.

Might be good for Guptill to be an ODI specialist for now. It's his best format by far. That way he can play some four day games for Auckland and build on his two centuries this season. I think experience is sometimes undervalued, and Guptill could do with some more four day experience in my book.

Such a good looking batsman though with a lot of skills that will help him succeed. I back him to come good long term.

Yeah, but if Guptill is in the test side he's going to get more value out of Crowe/Wright and Greatbatch then playing for Auckland.

I don't really agree because, despite what people will say about his play against short-pitched bowling, I don't think it's really a technical thing with Guptill. I think the best thing for him would be to play lots of four-day cricket for Auckland and work on converting that talent, technique and eye he has into consistent four-day runs. He's never done this at any serious level of cricket and I think it'd be a lot easier to work on that mental aspect of how to construct a longer-form innings playing for Auckland than in the pressure-filled environment that is Test cricket. He needs to develop a genuine method of constructing an innings that he can fall back on.

Not even close.

Taylor, Williamson, Ryder, McCullum and Broom for starters. Guptill has obvious talent, but he isn't one of the most talented players in New Zealand.
