Be an interesting squad selection given that Flower has stated he will rest players throught the summer with an eye on the ashes and World Cup in the winter.Broad and Collingwood seem favourites to get a break and possibly Swann too.

Can't wait to see who we pick, will they blood someone new or stick to the fringe players like Carberry and Tredwell?

Depends who's being rested. Can't see Carberry getting a game as Strauss and Cook have missed some International cricket in recent times. Suspect the resting of Collingwood means they'll play 5 bowlers, but Tredwell will only get a go if Swann is rested (which I can't see happening to be honest)

Assuming the stories about Collingwood and Broad missing the 1st Test are true I'd expect this eleven:

Strauss
Cook
Trott
Pietersen
Bell
Prior
Bresnan
Swann
Plunkett
Anderson
Finn

Mostly agree, but has Plunkett done a thing this summer to merit selection? Not that I could confidently offer an alternative tbh.

That was the one I was doubtful on - was wondering if an extra batsman should be picked until I realised that that would most likly be Bopara.

Only conceivable seamers I could think of otherwise were Harmison or Woakes, since Sidebottom shouldn't be anywhere near a Test team.

Well, rightly or wrongly, Shazhad has been around the England squad, so don't be shocked if he plays. BTW it's not been mentioned but surely KP should be the first one to be rested, has a new kid, has played in twentyy/20, IPL?

My side:

Cook
Strauss
Trott
Hildreth:ph34r:. but realistically Morgan
Bell
Prior
Rashid
Bresnan
Finn
Hoggard, but realistically, oh I don't give a ****, he's the best guy for the job amd should be playing. "Dial M" or Woakes as anybody but Plunkers, Saj or Sidebottom choice though.

Really don't care about first-class records, Eoin Morgan is the future, may as well get him in as soon as possible.

Still not for Morgan in the test side, what would we learn from him smashing Bangladesh anyway?

He has hardly played any first class cricket in recent times, give him a decent run at Middlesex.

I see us going in with:

Strauss
Cook
Trott
Pietersen
Bell
Prior +
Bresnan
Swanneh
Anderson
Sidebottom
Finn

Don't agree with Sidebottom being in the Test side, but Flower clearly likes him, and he played in South Africa, so I'd be surprised if he wasn't included. Would actually rather him play than Shahzad or Plunkett tbh. I don't see Pietersen getting rested either. He's only just regained his form, he needs to keep batting and cash-in against Bangladesh and make him even more confident. I wanna see him get that average well over 50, and cashing in against the Bangla's would help that.

Anoyed I cannot go and watch this but have very much run out of money, could maybe afford the 5th day but think we can be fairly certain there is not going to be one of those.

International 12th Man
Logically, Plunkett should be next in line considering he had a very good season last year for Durham, was in the test touring party for the SA tour and took wickets in the Lions game. Though of course relying on the England selectors to be consistent in their selection policy can seem like a mug's game sometimes.

Actually, just looked up his stats and didn't realise just how mediocre his start to this year has been. Maybe that vaults Woakes ahead of him.

As expected, Broad and Collingwood have been rested. Eoin Morgan, Steven Finn and Ajmal Shahzad have been called up to the 12 man squad.

Imagine we'll go in with:

Strauss
Cook
Trott
Pietersen
Bell
Morgan
Prior
Bresnan
Swann
Anderson
Finn

12th Man: Shahzad

Be surprised if that wasn't the XI we see at Lords. Can't see them using 5 bowlers and playing Shahzad tbh. Looking like it'll be a battle between Trott and Morgan for the place in the batting line-up when Colly comes back.

Why Morgan? Uhh I like the kid but jeez.
Shahzad makes me feel slightly ill as well.

The selectors/management like Morgan's attitude and want to give him a test (pun intended) in a slightly less rarefied atmosphere than something like an Ashes encounter?

Can't see why we have gone for Morgan, his first class record is mediocre to say the least. Not sure Shahzad is up to international cricket but there is only one way to find out i guess.I'd go in with 5 bats and Bresnan at 7 but i doubt we will and Shahzad will be the man to miss out.At least he can make the dash to Southampton for day 4 of the game with Hampshire.

Being realistic with our batting,as number 3 is such a problem surely giving Carberry a go there would have made more sense than blooding another number 5/6?

Just Morgan's FC record is so average and his 2009 season was so poor.. I'm not sure it sends the right message.
I know his List A and Domestic T20 records aren't as special as his ODI or T20I but I'm not sure that you can expect the same to happen for his FC and Test records.
His selection just doesn't sit well with me.

Hopefully it works out well, ala Vaughan, Trescothick and Colly who were all picked despite not having the greatest average. To be fair though, Morgan has already scored a ton against a South African XI which included Steyn, Ntini and Morkel, and he looked pretty comfortable against the Aussie's in the second innings of the warm up game last season when saving the game. He was also averaging 50 the season before last.

Having played no FC cricket this season.... seems like a great selection to me.

He was written off before he made his ODi debut, with people picking his domestic record apart, but look how he's done there. Flower and co clearly like him and his attitude. He's clearly good enough for International cricket and has put in some very impressive performances. Sure he hasn't done much for Middlesex, but I'm confident he can make the step-up.

Yeah, I'm not. Sure the guy looks to have the talent but Test cricket is a compleely different game. Selection has improved under Flower but there are still a few things I really disagree with.

Vaughan was averaging 27 the season before he was picked and Colly 28. How about we give him a chance first?

Even if he does score it be the usual "it was only Bangladesh" and people will be back moaning for the sake of moaning.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see how he goes. Given how well he's played in International cricket I think he can step-up and do well.
