Pattinson - stress fracture of the back - unlikely to play a part in the Ashes at all.
Bird - lower back strain - unlikely starter for the first Test but should be available at some point during the series.

Oh I have absolutely no idea if that's medically congruent; it's just what's been reported in the press. Pattinson's recovering really slowly and they've decided to take a more long-term approach with him now apparently, but Bird was cleared of a stress fracture and should be right to bowl again soon.

Also Smith won't be fit in time for the Ashes after undergoing major surgery which is threatening his career.

Read an article the other day forecasting the apocalypse with Clarke in doubt for Brisbane and Pattinson not progressing very quickly and in severe doubt for the whole series now. Will try and find it.
