As much as I don't rate David Hussey, he is putting the runs on the board which is all that a selector can ask of a player. I'd certainly rather see him in the test team than Voges.

Certainly Voges' Test-call up seemed a lot random last year. For the ODI team is one thing, but Tests?

Ridiculous batting depth in Australia. Absolutely ridiculous.
I guess the bowling stocks would be the main point of interest I guess, especially with the spinners. Even some of the pace bowling options need to be looked at. I would say only Lee and Clark are the two certainties to play in Brisbane for the bowlers. When would the Test squad be announced? Late next week I assume?

Theres no doubt that the pitches are getting flatter over ehre though

which is prolly why it seems we have a gazillion good batsmen and bowlers that are struggling

even Murali struggled today in Adelaide

Katich wasn't even in the Aus A team which travelled to Pakistan which was a 2nd Best XI. Watson is still injured and Hodge's ordinary form would just about ended his international career. Where as Dave played in Pakistan and was the 2nd best performed batsmen behind Jaques, racking up 300 runs at an average of 100 backing up a great county season. He has then continued his great Pura cup form from last season this one so far. In that Aus A series he was also the 2nd best performed in the one day arena.
The thing is though, all 3 of the batsmen i mentioned, are all (imo) actually better batsmen than Hussey. I won't deny that he has been in good form, because he has been, but the thing with David Hussey is, he's very prone to shocking patches of form, something that Katich & Hodge (apart from right now that is) haven't been during the course of their careers. Watson, on the otherhand, will be selected ahead of Hussey if he's proven that he's fit, and in reasonable form with the bat, for the simple fact that he provides a genuine 5th option with the ball.

I think David Hussey is a gun player and he has been ignored by the selectors for way too long now, he has the experience and quality to do well in every form of the game and its about time he makes his international debut.

Just for the sake of it? Yeah why not. After all, there aren't any better batsman to fill the Australian middle order.

I just read on another forum that Symonds was successfully bowling the doosra against NSW today. Surprising to say the least.

The team is announced on Wednesday. Although it's alarmist to read too much into this weekend, I do think it's provided somewhat of a window into the post-Warne, McGrath era. Guys like Lee and MacGill (our leading quick and spinner respectively) do have the potential to go for plenty of runs off not too many overs, while we really haven't got anything like an established 3rd paceman. While we won't suddenly stop taking wickets, we will bleed many more runs, much more quickly, than what we've seen for a long, long time. As spoiled Aussie fans, it will take some getting used to.

Well this weekend certainly hasnt gone to script. You could have just about bet your house on the test team on thursday, and although it would still be a suprise if Jaques, MacGill or Johnson were to miss out..this has certainly made things more interesting.

Superb timing from Katich, he was never as far from a recall as some people seemed to think, I've heard his name mentioned by the likes of Buchanan and Hayden in recent weeks and a 300 certainly wont hurt him. Especially given he was superb in England this winter when the likes of Jaques, Rogers and Hodge didnt do a whole lot. I dont think he'll be picked to partner Hayden at Brisbane as Jaques has done everything right so far this season and still has his name written all over it (although funnier things have happened, logically it should go to Jaques, but the selectors may ask themselves who they feel safer with and who they trust more, could be interesting). But in my eyes he has now leap-frogged Hodge and Rogers to be next in like for a spot anywhere in the Australian top six.

The last couple of months have been very unfortunate for Hodge, after world cup he must've felt on top of the world but things could not have gone worse in India or in this Pura Cup match. One must hold doubts over his international future at this stage, if he dosent do much of note in domestic cricket during November/December then he'll be long odds to make the CB series. Hope he claws his way back, but tbh I always thought Katich the better player anyway (in 4/5 day cricket).

Johnson had his name pencilled in before this round, but the fact he appears to have bowler poorly and Tait (for the second game in a row) bowled very well makes it interesting, Tait was ahead of Johnson before he injured himself and I spose its just a question of how fit he is, he seems like the sort of bowler who needs a bit of work under his belt, but its a test match and the best side must play. I expect both Tait and Johnson to be named in the squad for Brisbane.

MacGill by all reports was indifferent in QLD's first innings, didnt bowl terribly the pitch just wasnt helping him much and Hayden played him very well, hard to read much into it, his second innings showing may well be very important. Interestingly Hogg and *gasp* Heal both put in solid performances this weekend to keep the media talking, but they're still both at long odds to jag a spot in the squad.

Think its still 90% likely we'll see a 12 man squad consisting of-
Hayden
Jaques
Ponting
Hussey
Clarke
Symonds
Gilchrist
Lee
Clark
Johnson
Tait
MacGill

And I think if there is going to be a suprise from left field, however unlikely, it'll be Katich:ph34r:

It wil be interesting to see how Hilfenhaus and Tait do in the match starting tomorrow...Both are knocking on the door of a Test berth, and given the poor performances of Johnson and MacGill, if either of them do well they could very well be lining up against Sri Lanka.

I think Hilfenhaus needs either a massive performance or an injury really, they didnt even see fit to play him in the dead game in India so I think he's a little bit down the que atm.
But yes shall be interesting to see Tait....and Gillespie with an eye to if things to badly this summer.

From Cricinfo:
Hilfenhaus' 60 wickets at 25.38, the third most in the competition's history, included three five-wicket hauls, but his back-breaking workload must be monitored over the next couple of seasons. Last summer he delivered 509.1 overs in the first-class arena, nearly 200 more than any of his domestic fast-bowling counterparts.
So not only was Hilfenhaus the most effective wicket taking bowler, he was a stock bowler for Tassie for most of the 06/07 season. He's a gun and deserves a shot at the bigtime.

Agreed with Stephen. To say that Hilfy hasn't caught the eyes of the selectors with any huge performances is kinda silly...Who needs 'huge performances' when Hilfenhaus is taking 6 wickets a match on average?

Plus, in his 3 stints in Aussie colours he hasn't disappointed. He was wonderful in the ODI against NZ and really troubled the Indian batsmen quite a few times in the T20 there. He's definitely the stock bowler we're looking for now that McGrath is gone. And the sooner he comes in, the better. He's a deadset gun.

Yeah I'm a huge fan of Hilfenhaus too. Was very disappointed at the way the Australian Selectors treated him in India.

We don't need another good bowler doing a Bichel though and being a good 12th man.

IMO Hilfenhaus is a better bowler then Brett Lee, because The Hilf actually knows how to take wickets unlike BLee in the longer form of the game.

I would love to see Clark and Tait opening the bowling and then Hilf first change after a short burst from Tait.

I know it won't happen, but if all bowlers batted the same, and selectors didn't pick players because of experience that'd be my bowling trio.

I think Lee is being seriously over-rated by the Australian selectors when it comes to test cricket, and i don't know why he is being granted a place in the test team, his record in test cricket isn't too great so shouldn't he also be fighting out for a place in the test squad like the other Aussie bowlers.
Somebody like Tait will leak runs but he is much more likely to run through a team then Lee especially in test cricket, anyways Hilfenhaus is an amazing talent and Australia shouldn't waste his talent by making him sit on the fringes so i would draft him into the Australian team ASAP.
