Tough one. There are a few players like him, who need to bat in the top 3 to be of any use. No point picking Marnus to bat no. 6.

Was specifically talking about marnus at 3 over Smith, should have aligned the two points more clearly. Completely agree that marnus won't be of much use down at 6.

nah yeah sorry I did get that, I wouldn't even be thinking about dropping Smith for Marnus though, I should have said that. For Marnus to play you'd have to fit them both IMO

Aaron Finch (c), Ashton Agar, Wes Agar, Jason Behrendorff, Alex Carey, Dan Christian, Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Mitchell Marsh, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Josh Philippe, Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Swepson, Ashton Turner, Andrew Tye, Matthew Wade, Adam Zampa. Travelling reserves: Nathan Ellils, Tanveer Sangha. Final 18 man squad plus reserves announced

Green being left behind after being in the initial reserves confuses me, all of the potential leavers left, noene else has pulled out/not pulled out so him being ignored doesn't add up. Dan the man is there and ellis is a reserve so can't complain atleast.

Whatever it takes!!!
He's pulled out of this tour for personal reasons, if he was to then go to the ipl that seems like a big slap in the face to selectors, no?
I think its being harsh on the players. The timing of it all matters. They were in the bubbles in IPL and then had to do additional quarantine both in the Maldives and then again in Australia as they came in, which means they were twiddling their thumbs without seeing their closest ones for almost a month. Mentally it can be exhausting and I can understand why most would feel they need a proper time at home with their families before getting on the wagon again. IPL only restarts in September so plenty of time for the players to feel better and be ready for another bio bubble by then.

In Smith’s case it appears to be injury.

I can see the players argument but it does feel a bit galling to put the IPL ahead of national duty. Money does talk though....

Nah, they should have come home as soon as everything hit the fan in India.Making yourself unavailable for a National tour when you’ve been available for a purely commercial foray is a terrible look. They should be overlooked for the WT20.

I dont think that is true though. Our last IPL happened when we were in the peak of Wave 1 too. The only realistic time they could have gotten home was when the positive tests happened amongst the players but by that time, Australia had put this ban on them coming in. I really think you are being harsh on the players.

I'm not being harsh on them at all. They went OS to play for nothing more than big bucks in the middle of a global pandemic. I know some of them are down to their last Maserati, but they aren't paid so poorly the IPL is a necessity for them. They also would have had to do two weeks' quarantine when they got back from the IPL at any time. If the tourney had run its normal course, would the timing be that much different? the poor buggers would have had an extra two weeks in Chennai instead of the Maldives, which is comparatively awful but they knew what they were signing up for.

They've got back home and now they're knocking back playing for their country because reasons, including they've been away for so long. Get in the bin. I don't begrudge them going and playing in the IPL, but you can't be prepared to do that then turn around and say you won't tour for your country six weeks later because feels/ tired.

Looking back at the schedule, you are right. They would have come back around the last week of may and had to do 2 weeks of quarantine which would have been right about now. I suppose you are not harsh on them in that case but I can still see why they are pulling out, I guess. My point here is that had we not had that mad 2 weeks in Maldives PLUS two weeks in Australia quarantine rules maybe some of these guys would have been ok to make this trip.

Yeah that might be right, I just think absent some form of substantive explanation other than what we currently have of "a variety of reasons" then it's a terrible look. Obviously if you're injured or your partner is expecting a child that's one thing, but just choosing to stay home is quite the other afaic.

Burgey on the money as usual. Still a bit disgusted by the whinging these guys did when they went over for the IPL the first time and wanted the Aus government to look after them to an absurd level despite them willingly and knowingly endangering lives and businesses to chase a dollar. "But they will be quarantined when they get back" - yeah and quarantine ****s up. Which it did, again. And Victoria had to lock down and the gyms closed again, for 2 weeks.

If they want to go again they should be made to get ready for an extended stay overseas if anything goes **** up

tbf if this tour was replaced with the resumed IPL 2021, I think they'd have absolutely been down for it. After all they were willing to risk being shut out of Australia and contracting covid to finish the IPL.

The only reason they're skipping this is because 5 T20s and 3 ODIs against WI who they think are beneath them.

Also, I wish to make it clear that IMHO not touring because your missus is punching out a child is not a reasonable excuse. I realize other people don't feel the same way and that's a matter for them, but if you've got the energy to get her knocked up, you've got the energy to charge in off the long run while she's looked after by the midwife.

And tbh, if I told Burgeinho I'd missed his birth because I was racking up a double ton vs the Poms, he'd be thrilled. As he should be.

I suppose if there's one consolation it's that they're still going ahead with the tours regardless. Would've been even more dire if they used this as an excuse to can it.

Lol.. I wont go as far as to say they think they are beneath them. That is probably what CA thinks though. But fair enough about the rest of that post.
