What I don't understand is him getting picked again after he played like **** in Wellington and after there was clear reluctance from Southee to bowl him. Almost from the start of this test it was apparent Southee didn't rate his bowling and was only using him as a last resort. Why pick a guy like that?
Indeed. You can't go into any Test match with a passenger in the team. It was clear from the 2nd innings at the Basin that the confidence wasn't there to use him, so why in blue blazes would you select him again? It beggars belief. And, lo and behold, for the more experienced change bowler, he bowled 9 overs compared to Sears' 33. Wtaf. It's such a dense piece of selectorial behaviour.

The weird thing about this is that it was made out like Southee was the driving force behind him being fast-tracked from his 0-60 in a T20 in the UAE straight into the test XI. 🤷‍♂️

Probably so based on overall and/or future merit (particularly given how how SP looked in this series), but didn't he have literally the best figures in PS in the first half of the season? I could be wrong, but it was something like that. Hard to make an overwhelming case for someone else when you have incumbency from last year and the best statzzz in the comp this year. It's the sort of selection I would usually approve of tbh.

Don't get me wrong I would've preferred to see Smith get a go, or maybe even Dougeh, and probably even Wags, just because I don't see a future in SP and he's proven to be nowhere near reliable enough with the ball at this level. The pitches also turned out to be more conducive to traditional seam and swing type bowling anyway, the Kuggs role was pretty redundant.
He didn't really have the incumbency though. He got outbowled by Tickner who retained his selection for the SL series after Wagner broke. I agree those early season Plunket stats would've been awfully tempting - though TJB noted at the time that that Australia A side he played against was a glorified PM's XI and his wickets there should've been taken with a massive grain of salt (Sean Solia cleaned up too if memory serves).

He is although if I was Carey I would be a bit stiff about him not playing out that last over.
Cummins didn't know he was on 98. Scoreboard at the ground didn't show the players scores at the time apparently. Can't blame Cummins for not having that worked out in his head when he's trying to win a 4th innings chase.

Shouldn't matter anyway. It's a test match and individual miletones should be irrelevent if you can win the game ASAP. You don't extend the game and risk a hatrick next over by not scoring the winning runs

Incumbency perhaps the wrong word, I just meant he was higher in the pecking order than the competition (guys who haven't played internationals yet) for his particular role, which isn't Tickner's role. Smith was probably the only really serious competition I had in mind.

I was wrong though anyway, because Dougeh could've batted #8 and he played the last test of last summer.

Cummins batting as captain is weird. I feel like he should be averaging a fair bit more as captain after all the clutch knocks, but his average is near identical to his career (18 v 17).

Quite startling how much better Oz are in Test series in Australia compared with most countries.

Since their last series win in NZ in 2016 until today they'd only won one other away series - Pakistan 2022.

Five consecutive Test series wins in NZ; not sure Australia have done that in any other country previously.

Oh, and Australia win back the Bannerman Trophy. Given the accelerating decline of team's abilities to win games on tour, I suspect it will be there for a while.

Wasn't Cummins demoted below Starc due to poor batting? My general impression is he was #8 because he was seen as being "solid" and having some ability with the bat, then never made any runs and got demoted, and now just seems to be a heroic innings specialist who doesn't make runs otherwise.

Yeah, fair point. A big part of it is just plain bad luck that Smith, Sears and Fisher all had season ending injuries late in 2022 and so a) were unavailable for selection for the England tour and; b) missed the opportunity to bowl in Australia over the winter.

Yeah it's weird. When the pressure isn't really on he bats like McGrath

Just on Southee, I don't love his captaincy or his recent bowling form either and I agree it's problematic if the captaincy is keeping him in the side.

However, our run under his captaincy has been no worse than our performances under a combination of KW and Latham from WTC2021 until Southee was installed as captain. Actually, for me 2022 (diabolical losses to South Africa and Bangladesh at home and then an unparalleled series of 4th innings chokes in England) was worse than Southee's tenure, and less explicable given we still had at least partially KJ, Boult, Good Conway, Good Blundell etc.

Today's loss honestly feels like the nadir for me of 2.5 years worth of bad cricket, dumb cricket, and gutless choking, but tbf 2022 was worse and under Southee we've had some good moments too whether by good luck or good management. I think the rot goes a lot deeper than Southee, a sort of weak-minded complacent obliviousness that I don't know how to fix. Like, we've always found ways to lose games we shouldn't, that's NZ cricket, but we're really doing it with a sort of post-ironic panache these days.

Yeah, to be bluntly honest, the only major problem I see with Southee's captaincy has been his continued taking of the ball at the start of play. I know he would've wanted to succeed and produce the results for NZ, but taking the ball instead of throwing it to O'Rourke at Wellington or Sears here was a poor decision. Besides that, I think he's generally set pretty smart fields and made pretty reasonable bowling changes. Would probably score him a 6/10, would be 7 if he could wake up and accept he's the 3rd best seamer in the side.
