Inglis will open if he's in the squad, short likely bats middle order in that case.
I hope not, that would be a mistake

Also hasn't Carey been out of the ODI since he lost his place to Inglis in the World Cup? Surprised he's even in the squad

You think so? In the last ODI series he played inglis made 109 runs @54.5 and a sr of 150 opening the batting. Looked much better there than in the middle order when Australia tried him in the leadup to the last WC. He's also in excellent form ATM in the t20's.

ODIs now. Aussies would have the class to handle England. So sit back and enjoy England fans we are going to take this series

@Burgey is going to be fuming at the Aussie response come the end of the series

Shame you guys only picked 3 batsmen. Would have been an enthralling series otherwise.

Inglis would be fine opening, that's not the issue. But other than Maxwell he's our only other bat that can be suited to the middle order whereas we have Smith, Marnus, Head, Marsh, Short all who kind of need to bat top 3

I think Hull has been withdrawn from the squad by england so combinations could be

Salt
Duckett
Cox
Brook
Livingstone
Smith
Bethell
Carse/stone
Rashid
Archer
Mahmood/turner/topley

Dan Mousley was in the t20, but didnt get a game, so perhaps he might figure too. Is Smith playing just as a batter or will
he be keeper instead of Salt?
Topley used to be mr dependable but hes been hammered so badly in these matches, didnt have a great WC either [?injury].
Carse surprsingly looked the best so far but maybe he didnt bowl in the powerplay.

Tache culture seems to have taken over oz side, its difficult to tell them apart except for Zampa and SS.

I think that's probably a bowler light, and they like to have 4 quicks available. I doubt both Bethell and Smith start. Slightly odd that they left Curran out of this squad as he'd probably be about right for the number 7 spot and 4th seamer role.

The more I think about it, the more I think having kids like Connoly and Beardman in the squad is a really bad thing, especially if they end up playing games. How do you explain to the dozens of domestic cricketers that have been plying their trade for years, decades of training and performing, to earn a call up, that they are not really being considered but a cap gets given to this under-19 bowler that played 1 game for WA when 8 other bowlers were unavailable.

If Beardman got a game that'd have to be a record of least matches before selection. He's played one List A game for WA and that's it. He took 1-42 off 6 overs

Meanwhile Jhye Richardson is fit after just playing 3 T20 games in Darwin

Feels like Eng and Aus are trying to outdo each other on the level of leftfield selections. But then I guess that's what these largely pointless series are kind of for.

Pretty much

2nd XI has already started in Australia and one day stuff starts soon

Seems like they’re just giving some young guys the opportunity of being around the squad

Beardman might not even get a game for WA 2nds

England have outdone Australia for sure. Aus have still got most of their first choice team playing from what I can tell. England is a genuine A or B team

"We think you're not that good"? This has been a staple of Australian selection policy for ages, they always try to fast track the kids they think are straight up more talented than your average FC journeymen.

I think the Eng ODI team is stronger on paper than the T20 one, we at least have the likes of Brook and Duckett back. Had Buttler been available, would've made both teams seem more recognisable. But whatever team they put out it looks like being a batter light.

The Aus team now looks pretty strong with Starc and Maxwell coming in. It'll probably need a fine individual performance from an English player to win a game (eg Livingstone in the T20) as overall the Aus team looks a fair bit stronger.

Never to this extent though. Beardman has literally played 1 late-season List a match

Off the top of my head, ignoring all-rounders Green/Marsh/Hardie/Stoinis, WA quicks:

Behrendorff
Paris
Morris
Richardson
Tye
Haskett
Kelly
Stobo
Gannon
Coulter-Nile (does he still play cricket?)

Beardman would be behind all these guys

I'm not convinced Connolly would be in a WA 1st Xi either, even with the international all-rounders + Inglis unavailable.

I mean Nathan Lyon got his Test debut off, what, four FC games and a few good Big Bash games? Cummins got his off maybe three FC games? And those were honest to god (and actually quite important ones in the greater scheme of things!) Test matches, not the epitome of the throwaway white ball tour during footy finals that like three people care about. In that context, getting a run off "potential" alone isn't that much of a stretch.
