I mean, surely his performances for traditional cricketing powerhouses Khan Research Labs and Water & Power Development Authority would have been enough to get him selected earlier.
There are coupe of stories floating around both might end up being totally untrue.

1) Chairman of selectors Amir Sohail wanted to select him in 2003 but the other selectors vetoed the idea as they thought he would definetley get called for throwing so it was not worth the hassle.

2) Selectors do not even bother watching domestic games hence nobody knew how he bowled like when Misbah got selected he told the selectors that he has a teammate in Faislabad who is the best spinner in Pakistan and they should have a look at him in the nets.

Srsly though, can someone tell me what the result would have been if that last ball was a run out? For some reason the commentators were making out that if Australia got a wicket they would have won, but if they just blocked the last ball and it was a dot Pakistan would have won?

Is it the team who loses the least wickets in the super over that wins, then if that's a tie it goes to boundaries scored throughout the game?

12 in the event of the teams having the same score after the one over per side
eliminator has been completed, if the original match was a tie under the d/l
method, clause 14 immediately applies. otherwise, the team whose batsmen
hit the most number of boundaries combined from its two innings in both the
main match and the one over per side eliminator shall be the winner.
13 if the number of boundaries hit by both teams is equal, the team whose
batsmen scored more boundaries during its innings in the main match
(ignoring the over per side eliminator) shall be the winner.
14 if still equal, a count-back from the final ball of the one over eliminator shall be
conducted. the team with the higher scoring delivery shall be the winner. if a team
loses two wickets during its over, then any unbowled deliveries will be counted as
dot balls. note that for this purpose, the runs scored from a delivery is defined as
the total team runs scored since the completion of the previous legitimate ball, i.e
including any runs resulting from wides, no ball or penalty runs.
