He did ok in the ODI's in Aus, didn't he?
Had a look through the stats, as an opener he's hit runs against Windies, NZ, Pakistan and Zimbabwe, but has failed (badly) against SA, Ind & SL. 2 tons, 1 vs Zimbabwe. That said it's only a 16 match period (not including this game), he seems to be a duck or hundred type player with at least 3 ducks in this time period.
Yeah but it doesn't look easy out there and SA will have the lights to contend with too.

General feeling seems to be it'll be much easier to bat later on if they have wickets in hand when the shine wears off the ball.

Indeed. Works well (sometimes) in England when the easiest time to score is when the ball is old, works not so well in India when the easiest time to score is when the ball is new.
