Can't remember a better opening session for us in the past couple of years. Couldn't have asked for a better start.

That a big point, init? Of course if you are going to take the best fast bowler in the past two years out of the side it isn’t going to be the best.

Similarly, take Johnson out of the Australian attack and what have you got? Siddle (Good), ****house, Ronald McDonald and a nothing spinner. The only difference the Australians have is they have the likes of Clark waiting to return. South Africa don’t…

Steyn won't always be there. Anyway Siddle doesn't get taken to the cleaners in the way Morkel habitually does. How can someone who's made it to test level be so manifestly poor at putting the ball on a decent line and length?

Prince is brutal to watch sure he makes runs but he gets them in not the visually most pleasing manner.
The century he scored at Headingley last year was one of the best aesthetically I've seen in a long, long time. He was pretty turgid for years beforehand though.

SA usually fight back in the second test after they've lost the first at home but they haven't here and don't look like it. Seems the pressure of becoming #1 has taken its toll on their ability to even be competitive. They only put up on a fight on the penultimate day of the last test.

Remarkabe first session. Best start for Australia for quite some time now. Hughes such a dominating force.

Just had a tiny earthquake here in Melbourne. All the windows and cutlery were rattling for 10 seconds...

Great first session for Aus. It’s ok not being at the races for a session but if you are not threatening at least try to install some control but the South Africans haven’t even done that. Been a problem over the past few years is that the side is built to take wickets and if they don’t they can’t fall back to dry up the runs or box clever. If South Africa had such a start you could expect Johnson to start bowling five feet outside off-stump and McDonald to come on and bowl to onside packed field stump-to-stump.

Is anyone else getting sick of Kepler Wessels rubbishing Hughes' technique? Did he ever see himself bat?
Sorry to dig this up from a few pages ago but I couldn't resist (just logged on)

Feet way too wide apart!

Leading arm stiff!

Very little backlift!

Yeah so Hughes is wierd and twitchy, but i'd rather an "on his toes" technique to a "Leaden footed" one.

cheers

It wouldn’t be so bad if they dropped a few chances for at least it showed the bowlers did something but they haven’t created a chance. Shocking stuff and the problem now is that this isn’t Pakistan where 600 will play 800; the horse has well and truly bolted.
