The Battlers Prince

International Vice-Captain
*** me Guptill, what's the thought process playing as wide as he did in the last Pattinson over(the one past 3rd slip). Lose the toss on a green track at still playing that wide after what happened in Wellington. Wtf do they talk about during the week?

Incidentally, Pattinson scares the **** out of me.
That's what swing and seam does, it gets you to have the bat there following the ball. The next ball after the wide edge almost cut him in half it came back so much

McCullum's home record with the toss in tests

WWLLLWLLLLLWLL
That's quite telling, but more than that it's the really crucial ones on green tracks that flatten out after 5-6 overs that he's inevitably loses. Just like the one toss he did win in Adelaide (away from home) was possibly the one it didn't make such a difference given the whole new 'pink ball' factor.

There's Guptill.... gone after about his 4th life in 15 minutes....

Not the most elegant of catches, that.

Was always a matter of time for Guptill, though you would have picked him edging to slip rather than short leg.

The one that cut back wickedly was after the wide-push that went through 3rd slip. Any half-decent batting coach will tell you that you can't plan for the delivery that nips back half a metre.

Yeah Guptill always likely to get out here, though tbf these are very challenging conditions - more difficult than Wellington imo.

Stating the obvious, but so much riding on Williamson here. Can't see our middle order being able to resist a moving ball for long, especially with Australia bowling as accurately as they have been.

no one wants to be the bloke bowled without playing a shot

Hazlewood and Pattinson are the same age, same number of tests, 67 and 65 wickets respectively, similar average and SR, both within about 2 of each other.

Guptill; sigh. You had a life doing exactly that, get your hands out of the way and take it on the body.

Nah BS, if your done shouldering arms from a nut that cuts back half a metre, no coach would blame you. But if you're out pushing wide at one possibly missing a 2nd set of stumps against the new ball on a green track, you deserve a bollocking.

It's about percentages.

a better option would be to play a full blooded shot instead of nurdling with a man in close. It's all captain hindsight at this stage though.

Interesting to see that the swing seems to have died down already; however there's still plenty of seam movement.
