I'm not actually advocating any complicated change to the rule because it would be a bit ridiculous, but what I'm talking about wouldn't lead to that outcome at all. It would only protect batsman who are playing at the ball and playing down the right line and hell, actually HITTING the ball.
That's all fine and well when it's obvious that he would have hit the ball had it not hit the pad first, but what about marginal cases, or cases where that isn't clear? The system couldn't really account for that, which would be a major issue.

On first look Latham's & Nicholls' dismissals both looked soft, just searching for good length deliveries outside the off-stump. Not advisable on green decks on day 1 of a test.

*** me a high proportion of KW's dismissals are off the inside edge whether it's caught or played on. This in addition to being strangled down the leg-side more than most.

Which is why I don't actually want a rule change. Just sometimes a thing happens that's within the rules but seems a bit off.

So seems the peope who were really trolled by this pitch were us here at CW huh?
Nah, aside from hendrix we all knew this pitch was going to be extremely difficult to bat on on day 1. We'll only be trolled if top orders are still getting rolled on day 2.

Come back tomorrow. Do you even understand the history of these wickets? Of course they're gonna do a lot early, they just tend to flatten out significantly.
