Seems bizarre to say it about someone who has bowled as much pus as Bird has this morning, but he might've been a big asset for Australia this morning. We scored freely off the crap he was bowling, and probably became too free in mindset which had us in trouble v the guys who bowled well. Might've been more inclined to grind it out if Siddle had taken the newie instead. Or I could be looking too far into it.

Not Terrible
I miss the pre-McCullum era steady, predictable 123 for 5 starts. Anything could ****ing happen these days, it's scary and unsettling.
Whaaaaaaaat

When did that happen on pitches like this? These two spuds are our best openers since Richardson.

Smacks of one of those pitches in which we may want to be bowled out before tea just to get a decent crack at Aust while the wicket is still green... Will probably flatter tomorrow.

The one thing I hate about these NZ pitches that are only green for 1 day or so is we always lose the toss and it's almost impossible to get back into the match if it does brown off and flatten out quickly. :P
You really don't though. The problem if you get rolled for 120-150 odd is if one bloke gets going in session three the game is gone. Cf, Ponting @ Headingly 2009

Perfect test pitch mate.
It is when you win the toss. Not when you lose it and then are forced to play catch-up and are so far behind when you do get decent conditions to bat 2nd time around. BTW had we won the toss I wouldn't be complaining :p

Also, I'm assuming the wicket will flatten tomorrow, tbf it may remain sporting for a couple of day - here's hoping.

Not a bad point IMO.

Yeah, there's an element of that for sure. On the other side I'd hate to see us use up 80 odd overs to stagger to 160 all out and then see totally different coloured wicket tomorrow morning.

True dat. I suppose you're one decent partnership from getting 200 plus (the downside of the loose stuff early). That's far from ideal but it's something to bowl to.

When Australia gets rolled cheaply they then tend to bowl **** because they're looking for the miracle ball instead of just hitting areas. You'd think they'd know better, they've had a bit of practice at it lately.
