great news

8.28 local time: Dileep Premachandran, one half of our dynamic duo at the ground, says that the players have gone through their warm-ups. We have news now that a pitch inspection has been scheduled for 9.00 local time. What this means is that the toss has been delayed by half an hour, at least.

Now Jamie Alter, the other half of the duo, makes his observations: "The gates were open as early as 4 am here in Kochi, and by 8.15 the stadium had filled up sizeably with many still flocking in."

The main, and probably the only talking point right now is the weather. There is bright sunshine at the moment at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The covers are off and our sources at the ground have informed us that there is a very good chance of getting a game.

apparently this is an 80 000+ seater.. brilliant

according to weather reports.. 50% chance of rain in Cochin.... looks like its going to be another washout.

According to cricinfo it's really sunny and the groundsmen are confident of getting a game. Anyway, Ganguly's out so I'd leave Gambhir to open with Tendulkar and bring Rohit Sharma in at #5, but I have a feeling the selectors will opt for Robin Uthappa. So long as Karthik doesn't play, I'll be fairly happy.

Awesome effort by the groundsmen - the hot coals on a corrugated iron thing was genius! The pitch could be interesting - those who like their ODIs with totals 350+ might want to whack in a DVD of the SA/Aus game...

:D

Early reports indicate a few cracks on the pitch, India will likely play two spinners.

Fox Sports are loving this. They've just played about 20 adds in a row and given us a highlight of Flintoff's 89 in Sydney.

Barry Richards was having a look at it - looks like it has some moisture in it, the surface has some give and is 'tacky', and there are grass clippings roled into it. Concur with his assessment that 250 will be a good score.

Loving the commentator telling Gilly and Dhoni to pull their hats up so the people watching on T.V. can see their faces "in full glory".

Uthappa in for Ganguly, be interesting to see whether he or Gambhir opens with Tendulkar.
