Allan Border just compared Ashwin carrom ball to "John Gleeson". Any Australian cricket fans here know who he is? Need a history crash course.
Basically Mendis 50 years ago. Same thing. An initial mystery but quickly worked out. Iverson-Gleeson-Mendis are the only three that I know of. I am sure others may have more examples.

He's got 450 test wickets lol. People must have taken their time before they got around to finding out.
They were all crap batsmen you see. Otherwise they'd have scored runs against a crap bowler like Lyon, who can only take wickets against crap batsmen like them.

This might be better. I've cut up his action into two distinct phases.

Here you can see the arm is bent at the beginning, and then it straightens. Obviously, you're allowed to be bent until it gets to shoulder level. And the elbow flexion that @Spark and @Gob mentioned.

This is the 'jerk' that you see in real-time.

But the second part of the action is significant hyperextension as @social and @Pup Clarke said, and it can deceive the eye in real-time:

Make of that what you will.
Ooft! I haven't done a complete 360. But yeah...that doesn't look great from side-on. Wonderful breakdown @silentstriker Alot of nuances that you just can't see from front-on

Jokes aside, his form is really worrying. This should be one of the few Indian wickets that suit him

Would they make a movie about Nathan Lyon in Australia, like it would make for good viewing considering he come from poor back ground and was basically a nothing cricketer and a groundsman i believe before his test debut for Australia.

He’s bowling too straight imo. He leaves that big gap at cover, which I understand as he wants blokes driving against the spin, but I think it’s effecting him because he doesn’t want to concede through there so he compensates by getting too straight .

I’d like to see him have an extra fielder in the ring on the off side, or if not a deep cover and encourage the drive through there against the turn by bowling wider. Especially on this pitch which looks like it’s got some up and down

Yeah I’m not sure why he thinks bowling at their hips to be turned around the corner for easy singles is the better option. Bloke has enough experience to know better

I don’t even know if he’s consciously doing that tbh. I think the big gap on the off side just dials him into that line whether he means to or not.

obviously if he bowls over the wicket he will tend to bowl wider, but even from around the wicket if he tosses it wider he’s a real chance of getting one back through the gate or having it go straight on to slip

I think you’re right but he should be more aware of what he’s doing is what I’m saying

I've always thought Lyon's biggest weapon was the bounce he gets - he imparts top spin on the ball rather than side spin.

From what I've seen of this test, the pitch is a bit of a pudding and that takes away much of Lyon's threat.

KL Rahul seems tentative so i think Lyon could have a attacking field when bowling to him, rather than giving him easy singles early on.

Precisely what he should do now. Let m00peh attack from around
