He also avg 12 on some of the most tailor made surfaces for spinners in recent memory! Jadeja for reference avg 10 against SA on similar surfaces back in 2015 & two of them were flat decks, Bangalore and Delhi, against much better players of spin. We also saw how Kuldeep absolutely outbowled both the incumbents in Bangladesh, though ultimately it will depend on the track. If they're flat I'd prefer Kuldeep whilst on turners Bapu's batting could be handy.
Exactly... On those surfaces even Root got a 5 for... Not that anything is wrong with it... But skill level wise we know Axar can't come remotely close to a 5 fer in Australia like Kuldeep.
Kuldeep showed his class in one of the flattest pitches of SC in Chattogram. The gulf was massive.
Spin v Spin Axar doesn't stands a chance ideally. Only his additional batting quality trumps Kuldeep. But Kuldeep's brilliant record vs Aussies should be end of the debate.

If iyer misses out will be interested to see how SKY goes. Made a few run a ball 90's for mumbai on some hard decks in his recent ranji games.

Chennai 2021, first (second?) test against Lankans last year.
Chennai was only flat for a couple of days, and then fell apart, and I'm pretty sure SL lost a bowler as well during that Test, while our bowlers dominated with Jadeja getting 9 in the match.

What having two left arm spinners? Imo Axar only comes in if Bharat plays over Kishan. Kuldeep is overall a lot better spinner especially vs overseas sides.
You do realise we literally played Ashwin/Jadeja/Axar vs NZ at Kanpur in 2021 and vs SL in 2022 at Mohali and Bangalore? And it's worked fine so far. Axar walks in ahead of Kuldeep any day at the moment, good bowler + can bat better than Kuldeep. And it isn't like Axar has struggled much vs overseas sides yet, so I'm not sure why you expect him to do worse all of a sudden.

That's how most "flat" wickets in India work, especially in hotter regions. You'll rarely see tracks that don't deteriorate over the course of the game, they do slow down of course so that helps draw some of them. In winters you would get less pitch deterioration but slightly/lot more help in the first session depending on where the game is played. If we take few posts here wrt "flat" then post 2010 there's really only Chennai 2016 & Ranchi 2017 that would fit into that criterion!

Unreasonable pitches ??
I mean that first test pitch in 2017 was pretty ridiculous tbf. Rest where fine. Think rank Turner's help AUS tbf, only need one of Usman, smith or marnus to get a score to be competitive and it neutralizes the gap between our spinners and India's spinners. We saw a similar effect when Aus where in sri Lanka earlier in the year.

First test was on a rank Turner and it turned swepson into a genuine threat. We one by 10 wickets thanks to green+uzzie+Carey but realistically all we needed was one of them to play the innings they played to be on par. Then sri Lanka produced a more normal subcontinent deck in the second test and our spinners couldn't complete despite marnus and smith given us a solid 1st innings total.

If I am not wrong NZ drew the test in Kanpur or was it? In any case Kuldeep I think was not part of that Test squad.
In any case Kuldeep's form is clearly with him right now. And Aussies do have struggles against him in the past. Axar's accurate darts are good enough on turners but if they roll out a good pitch & Aussie win the toss like they did in Dharamsala we need Kuldeep to have some sorta X factor in there.

Axar averages 24 in 48 first class matches, so he sure has bowled well across a variety of pitches. How are we so sure Axar won't work on a good pitch? In contrast, Kuldeep averages 30 in domestics, so expecting him to turn up in tests against Aussies and rout them is much more riskier than playing Axar.

Whatever it takes!!!
I really think we may not have Jaddu and Shreyas at least for the first test. Expecting something like this to line up.

Rohit (c)
Rahul
Pujara
Virat
SKY / Gill
Kishan / Bharat (wk)
Axar
Ashwin
Kuldeep
Siraj
Shami

Not very confident. :(

Ashton is a spud and deserves every bit of slander he gets.
It's kind of funny how he played one absolute blinder to win a series for Australia in India and then basically vanished from selectorial contention (for fair enough reason tbc) thereafter

Really, did you forget the second test? It was even worse than the first game at Pune, but I guess since you probably don't remember as you only won the first one.

Yes on flat decks India would neutralize almost every attack out there, including Oz, whether the opposition's in form or not. The issue however is that none of our bowlers are in peak form, like say Jadeja/Ashwin 5-6 years back & Axar has yet to deliver on such tracks against good sides. So most of these tests would end up in a draw, of course assuming that we bat well on them - which right now is dodgy to say the least!

Got a bad case of Stoinisitis has Ashton Turner. Crap most of the time but can pull the odd absolute blinder out of nowhere, such a frustrating cricketer
